Guys,

 

Came across this article on SgCarMart that I thinks explains well for the 3 main types of car battery today.

Informative but seems like a paid advertisement from the battery agent. Nevertheless it's a good read

As the article said...not all batteries are created equal. There are so many different type of batteries is to cater to different usage.

 

Try using a AGM battery in the hot engine compartment. Not only user won't enjoy the benefit of the AGM but the battery will die off earlier as AGM does not like heat. Typical AGM would be used away from the heat like in the boot or some other cars below the passenger seats.

I'm looking towards changing my batteries. Think the current one going to die liao. 

 

Have y'all heard about Lithium-Iron batteries? I was reading up about it, really quite impressive. Especially for start/stop and life cycle quite long. Anyone know where to get?

Yes.  If you hear the price of the lithium-ion batteries, you will think that the AGM are dirt cheap. 

 

It's not for the mass market yet bro.

 

Market is not ready to accept lithium ion battery, at least for SEA.

Why you say SEA not ready to accept Lithium ion battery for car? I read about it, long run like more worth it - money wise la haha I always trying to find good deals!

I use LiFePo4 battery on my motorcycles.

 

higher CCA? - yes

lightweight? - yes but what is 10~20 kgs weight saving to a 1.5 tons car or a 240 kg+ motorcycle ?

expensive? - very

Charging cycle for Li-Ion battery is different from lead acid batteries. It needs a higher amperage which your present alternator is not able to supply. You would need to upgrade your alternator...program the new parameters to your ECU (that is if it can be done).

 

Lastly you hear what a Li-ion battery cost...you will just use back your normal lead acid batteries. 

 

L3 DIN size battery (75Ah) in the market cost around 200ish depending on brand. Li-ion is SGD1.6K. The BMW M cars uses them. Good luck if stuck somewhere and need to replace battery...can't just walk into any shop to buy one. 

 

For start stop cycle, it is not really very suitable for urban driving like in Singapore, Malaysia or Indonesia etc....the traffic jam will drain your battery in no time and the ECU will stop the start stop function to prevent draining of the battery. But since the car comes with this function, might as well use it right...just need to do some modification to your driving style. Eg switch off your start stop function when you are stuck in a jam (eg causeway to JB) and lower your aircon temp to 224-25 degree so that you can have a longer shut down (cos if you set your thermostat to lower temp, your ECU will kick in the engine earlier to maintain the temp as the air con compressors runs off via the engine. During engine shut down, only your fan is blowing.
