But essentially there is a side meant for facing outwards (more water repellant) and one more comfy permeable side side in contact with your face's skin. Do not wear the side meant for outside on the inside. Actually, surgical mask is originally used for surgeons and scrub nurses in the operating room to prevent their saliva/tiny respiratory droplets from contaminating the sterile surgical fields. It is only in more recent years that there is a social conscious effort to promote wearing of surgical mask when u are sick to reduce the chance of spreading your infecrious disease to others via respiratory aerosols such as in situation of cold/flu/bronchitis/pneumonia etc. Surgical makes will not protect wearer fully from viruses such as SARs or H1N1, that's why the need for N95 masks.
