Jamesc Hypersonic November 6, 2018 Share November 6, 2018 (edited) Jamesc's 30 second guide on how not to get ripped off with lousy French wine. The quality of all French wines is actually written on the label and you just need to know how to read it and its very simple. There are only 3 qualities of wine in France. 1. Vin de Table - Table wine and lowest quality 2. Vin de Pays - Country wine and one quality up 3. Appellation Controlee - wine with Guaranteed Quality. So if the waiter offers you a Vin de Pays and an Appellation Controlee at a similar price the Appellation Controlee will be the one to choose. These days got so many snooty people that are "experts" in wine and if after one sip they tell you the Vin de Pays is better than the Appellation Controlee. They are BSing. Lowest quality - Vin de Table Better quality - Vin de Pays Top quality wine - Appellation Controlee Edited November 6, 2018 by Jamesc ↡ Advertisement

Lowest quality - Vin de Table Better quality - Vin de Pays Top quality wine - Appellation Controlee Now they call it Vin De France for the lowest level wine? Vin De Pay'doc & Pay'doc still being use interchangeably right? Is same same right? Italian classification use DOCG, DOC, IGT and Vdt. Spain is DOC, DO, Vino De La Tierra, Vino De Mesa. For Rioja region is Gran Reserva, Reserva and Crianza is by amount of time the wine spent in oak barrel aging. Vin de Table or Table wine is the lowest classification and is wine that can come from anywhere in France and so I guess can also call it Vin de France or simply French wine. I guess its for International marketing. Tell people its wine made in France and people will say it must be good and pay more for it when its just plonk. Vin de Pays or Country wine will always have a higher quality as Vin de Pays can only come from 6 regions in France. The biggest producer of Vin de Pays is the region of d'Oc and as you say is also known as Pays d'Oc. Edited November 6, 2018 by Jamesc
Jamesc Hypersonic November 6, 2018 Share November 6, 2018 The worse thing that every happened to wine is China. If you do business in China every flipping idiot will ask to drink Lafit Lafit and you can put a Chateau Lafite label on a bottle of the worse wine and they will drink it. All this does is drive up the price for people that appreciate it. CB dumb China men spoil it for everyone else.

Theoldjaffa Hypersonic November 6, 2018 Share November 6, 2018 That's why I say.. those snobs who drink only expensive wines are not true connoisseurs. Give them a blind taste test, I bet they won't be able to tell the difference.
Angcheek Hypersonic November 6, 2018 Share November 6, 2018 Just tried the Chilean wine. 19 Crimes Shiraz is like good ristretto. Rich and flavourful. This Chilean Shiraz is like McDonald's normal coffee. Very plain and thin. Don't waste money buying it!

Give them a blind taste test, I bet they won't be able to tell the difference. Takes a real enthusiast to really be able to do blind tasting. Takes an expert to accurately access the wines. But to blind taste blends will be more difficult than straight varietals. blind tasting have to provide 1) Varietal 2) vintage 3) Country 4) region 5) price range 5) aging potential Judgement if Paris (1976) is the best example of blind tasting. Highly expensive wines may not be rated much higher than a wine 1/10 the price.

Yeah but you are jumping one division. Not fair. There are so many bad Appellation Controlée wines around. Can you honestly tell me you haven't tasted a bad one? Contrarian 2nd Gear November 9, 2018 Share November 9, 2018 I like to go to wine tasting sessions to try some different wines and expand my knowledge. One of the places that I go to quite a lot gives free $20 tasting credits almost every Saturday, and I thought it might be useful to some of us. It's 75cl at 8 Jalan Kilang Barat, and the details you can find on their site. If there's enough interest, maybe one day we can arrange to head there for a free tasting afternoon.

I learn a lot. The good news is there's nothing for you to worry about They give you a $20 card and a glass, you go to the machines and press whatever wine catches your fancy and let the machine dispense a tasting portion. $20 will get you 3-5 portions depending which wines you pick. ↡ Advertisement
