The Taiwanese news reported that they also faced the same problem of shortage of railway maintenance workers. All the older staff got chopped and team strength reduced.

Looking at the footage of the CCTV at the accident area, the train was indeed very fast coming round the bend.

It was also reported that the train stopped 2 times for a short while due to some issues and then continue on the journey and shortly later, the train crashed. Maybe the train driver was in pressure to ensure he arrive on time to the next station and thus speed through the bend also.

Haiz..

Japanese technology is not always the best, especially those export model.

let see whether will the Taiwan gov improved after they reunion with china.

No matter how good the technology, if met with idiot people operating the machine, it will also be a disaster. Edited by Yewheng

preliminary investigation point to speeding, they have to further investigate why the train didn't reduce speed whether human or mechanical fault.

of course many also blame the long outstanding SOP and the internal issues (manpower, tight schedule, maintenance, etc) of the train company.

Yah, this morning heard radio news said the normal speed approaching the bend was supposed to be 70 km/h (which is already damn fast, i feel), but the train didn't slow down and was doing 140 km/h... dunno real or not...

if real, 140 km/h at a bend, is confirmed catastrophic leh...

Seems like the driver was trying to troubleshoot problems, left the speed limiter off. Then forgot to switch it back on.

Sigh... this type of human error, can be so unforgiving... so many died, and many more badly injured.

It will be tough on the culprit - if he is one with a conscience...

The train company is in deep shit.

Faulty train still send it out for its routine trip and didnt have a service engineer on board to assist the driver when it is running with fault. How can a driver be buzy troubleshooting any issue and communicating when he should just be concentrating on driving.

The control station also allow driver to turn off the automatic train protection system while the faulty train is catching up with its schedule which it has been late for all the stations it stopped.

It is literally an enactment of the pilots who turn off the wrong engine for the fatal flight235.

Apparently the whole management knew about the problem since they were in the same chat group when the driver informed about the issue. They were betting on moving further to the next stop where there was a replacement train to take over.

The train company probably will go bankrupt if every victim family claim via civil lawsuit.

At least if the root cause can be investigated, hopefully it can be prevented in the future. The wenzhou one simply buried.

By right all SOP and safety are in place and has to be adhere to closely. But due to pressure from investor, mgmt, passenger, authorities and others, the operator obviously have overlook and ignore certain safety aspect which caused the accident. The fix must really be from all the way up to bottom. Edited by Xers007

Taiwan train driver switched off speed control before deadly accident: court

YILAN, Taiwan (Reuters) - The driver of a train in Taiwan that crashed killing 18 people told a court on Tuesday he had switched off its speed-control system, a court official said, as investigators pieced together events that led to the island's worst rail crash in decades.

The train came off the rails on Sunday on a curve while moving at almost 87 miles per hour (140 kmh), nearly twice the speed limit of 46 mph (74 kmh), in the island's mountainous northeast, the head of a government investigation team said.

Chief investigator Wu Ze-cheng told Reuters earlier it was not clear whether the speed-control system, called automatic train protection, had switched off by itself or had been manually disabled before the accident, which also injured 187 people.

A spokesman for Taiwan Yilan District Court told Reuters the driver told his bail hearing he switched off the system himself to boost the train's power when it had slowed down on an earlier stretch of the journey.

"He should have turned the system back on at the next stop," said the court spokesman, Huang Yong-sheng.

"The defendant is highly suspected to have been negligent."

Reuters was not able to reach the train driver, You Zhen-zhong, 48, for comment. He was granted bail of T$500,000 ($16,167) and barred from leaving Taiwan after being detained for the investigation.
