Times are different nowadays, especially after that guy killed the salesperson while test driving a MX5.

Trade plate also got insurance coverage.

Since he signed indemnity form, there is insurance coverage for him in case of accident.

Got money, sure can test drive. Who will turn down business? Ferrari, Porsche and M5 can be arranged as well (even for those under 25), just bring your Centurion Black, sup card also can. Lol

No money, don't waste your time and those of the SE lah.

As a new driver, buying pre-owned makes more sense, you need years to define what you like and dislike in a ride but if you have money, who cares! I envy you, 18 years old can dream of your own car, i didn't even dare think about it till i was around 30 years old and that time, they don't have these strange blood sucking things called COE and ERP.

Haha you must think I'm super old. It was 10 years ago that I got my license. That MX5 incident happened before i got my license.

Back then the car had a regular license plate leh. All I can say is that I enjoyed the joyride. Finally got to drive a new conti after driving a stupid W124 for 3 months.

My 1st car was bought around 30yr old.

And it was a COE EP70 Starlet.

Don't even dare to walk into new car show room.

what car are you interesting test driving?

because AD will straightforward to think you're joker, as you definitely are not capable to buy the car at your age without your parents' support, [:p]

I'm gonna disagree with you.

Many many years ago when I was in poly, there was this scheme for poly students to sign on with SAF. So if you sign on at the beginning, maybe a few K plus monthly salary of thousand plus and all school fees paid.

IF you signed on in second year (about 18 years old), you get one year's back payment plus sign on bonus plus reimbursement for one year school fees in one lump sum with allowance from then on. The best is when one signs on in third year.

I remember the recruitment officer was even saying you can buy a small car with the lump sum.......

I won't know what AD will think but it's possible for an 18 year old to have the money to buy. Though I strongly suggest no :D

Not sure if such schemes still exist, though. Or if you were a nurse, and you sign on with a hospital in the second year, if back payment of allowances still happen.....

can i go and test drive any car at showrooms at 18yr old or is there minimum age?

Need to have valid driving license.

Also I suppose if you are P plate, then it will raise some alarm bells or they will straight use that as excuse to stop you.

If you go with parents, then higher chance. At least the sales will at least have hope that you have family support to finance the purchase.

If not, I assume they either will use a minimum age limit or other excuses to stop you. It's not just about waste of time, also they do not want stuff like test-drive accidents (one such chap just doing test-drives for fun crashed an MX-5 and killed the sales few years ago).

Why so scared to walk into a new car showroom? What is the sales person gonna do? Judge you? Make fun of you? No confidence ah?

There is nothing wrong with looking around and expressing interest in a car if you want a test drive. These sales people are paid to serve customers. If you go on a weekday, there is hardly any customers. Might as well get the sales person to do something useful instead of going to the back of the showroom to smoke. There is no harm with trying the car out. At least you know whether you like the car or not. If you like the car but don't have the funds to get it, it serves as a goal that you can work towards. If you don't like the car, at least you know that you should consider other cars in the future.

Clearly TS new and isn't serious about getting a car. If he has to ask MCF whether can test drive showroom cars, clearly he doesn't know how to present himself when he walks into the showroom. I've had no issues getting test drives despite being on a p plate and 19 years old at the time. I went on my own. Of course maybe the sales people took me more seriously because I drove to the showrooms.

I've done so many test drives for fun. Unless you are trying to test drive a second hand car, then you'll have a problem. Used car dealers always want a deposit before you test drive. Otherwise they will probably only let you drive around the compound or car park. If you test drive a brand new car at the showroom like at VW or PML, no worries. Just give them your license and IC. They will ask you to sign an indemnity form and then you can take the car out.

you are so new to driving, what would you know about car and hence, what is there to test drive ? Any car will appear the same to you, get someone experience to test drive for you makes better sense.

since you have no driving experience, dont risk other's new car  for your own learning.  And there might be life involved too.

So the key consideration is not whether 18yr old is allowed to test drive, but it is the responsibility of individual to know whether he should test drive or not.

Test it out. No harm. At least you know how it drives. Then when it appears on the second hand market, you have a basis of comparison. Test driving a car you're interested in is not a waste of time. It is simply taking the opportunity to have a better understanding of the car you're interested in. I test drove the golf and scirocco. Hated how both of them drove so I know for sure i am never getting one. I got a chance to be reunited with the BMW experience (rented a BMW) in the states after being stuck with my japanese piece of shit for a few years. I realised that the Japanese car(the one in my profile pic) i had was a piece of shit I never should have bought. Got rid of that turd and replaced it with a BMW once I returned to SG. Best decision ever.

Its like when you are not ready to get a girlfriend, there is no harm in socialising and meeting some girls. At least you know how girls think, interact and behave. Then you have an idea what kind of girlfriend you want to get.

Just be aware that you are liable for damages to the test drive car and other car(s) should you get into an accident.

There is insurance coverage but there is still an excess to pay.

SE kenna sure sian, need to wait one full round before serve another fella.

I normally would not waste the SE’s time (and my own) if I’m not considering buying

They may say ‘no obligation’ but the time wasted on you could be a forgone sale and an inconvenience to genuine buyers

Kena hv to wait in line for test drive b4 coz the SE had to serve another wannabe test driver. Sure enuf it was a joyrider and the SE apologised for making me wait but said bo pian still hv to entertain even when it’s obvious it’s a joyrider coz some of them may comprian if SE dun entertain them

Test drive if you have the intention to purchase or to do a comparison before you sign the dotted line  [nod]

If solely for the purpose of testing out the cars, please don't .... [;)]
