Don't see any Kaohsiung thread so starting one.
Anyone been there recently? Any recommendations? Hotels?
Can take the MRT from airport to town?
Thanks.

went there on a group tour many years back … stayed at Kaohsiung Kingdom Hotel.
worst hotel I have ever stayed before. room was very small and towels were damp.
*pls don't say 一分钱一分货 ... as this was a group package and the other hotels were still ok.

Kaohsiung for me was better than expected.
People are nice and food was good and cheap.
More to relax rather than rushing around to sight seeing
Most memorable was having a dinner at a restaurant and saw their local beer. Ordered the beer and comes with a cute small glass. Later i asked the owner if I may buy a glass from him. He did not say much. Later when we paid up, he came with 2 boxes and told it was a gift from them. There are 12 new glasses inside. I was embarassed to say the least. They refused to collect any payment. The glasses were not your free glasses from the brewery but their own.

I was in Kaohsiung for a week last month. My wife and I stayed at Kindness Hotel just opposite Kaohsiung main station (R11 on the MRT map). It's about less than half an hour ride from Kaohsiung airport. At about S$81 per night, there's free breakfast (7am to 10am), free supper (8.30pm to 10.30pm), free coffee/tea and ice-cream from 3pm, free usage of washer / dryer.
Also took the opportunity to travel to Tainan for a one day trip to Anping Old Street and Garden Night Market via their TRA. You may want to factor in time to visit Hengchun or Kenting. About 2.5hrs one way to Kenting from Kaohsiung.
List of places we visited:
a) Taroko Park (Got Go-Kart, shopping centre and amusement park)- Station R4A
b) Dream Mall - Walk from R6 or take their light rail from R6 to C5
c) Sanduo Shopping District (2 Night markets, shopping centres) - Station R8
d) Night market, shopping centres, cat cafe cum massage - Station R9
e) Liuhe Night market, Formosa Boulevard train station - Station R10
f) Ruifeng Night market - Station R14
g) Shopping centres. Alternatively take shuttle bus to E-Da Mall (outlet mall) and amusement park - Station R16
h) Gangshan Skywalk - Station R24
i) Cijin Island (Take ferry from ferry terminal. If can ride bike, rent from the mainland, not at the island) - Station O1
We used their you you card for all modes of transport in Kaohsiung. Did not take cab at all, but we walk a lot....
Hope this helps.
