Singapore-Malaysia ties took a sudden turn on two fronts yesterday, as simmering disputes over airspace and territorial waters came into the open.

Singapore said it had lodged a strong protest with Kuala Lumpur over its move to extend the Johor Baru port limits to encroach into the Republic's territorial waters off Tuas.

The Republic added that it would not hesitate to take firm action against intrusions and unauthorised activities in its waters.

"Singapore has protested the unauthorised movements of, and purported assertions of sovereignty by, these vessels, which are inconsistent with international law," it said.

"The Republic of Singapore Navy and the Police Coast Guard are safeguarding the sovereignty of Singapore territorial waters and enforcing the security of these waters on a 24/7 basis," it added.

Mr Khaw said the Malaysian actions "are clearly a violation of our sovereignty and international law"

The maritime clash surfaced just hours after Malaysia's Transport Minister said Kuala Lumpur planned to retake charge of managing airspace over south Johor that had long been delegated to the Republic, drawing a swift response from his Singapore counterpart.

"It is not our stance to take a confrontational approach," said Mr Anthony Loke. "But this involves our sovereignty, which the Malaysian government will defend in the strongest terms."

This drew a swift response from Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan, who said: "Airspace management has nothing to do with sovereignty, and many countries have their airspace, or at least part of (it), managed by other countries."

Rather, it was about safety and efficiency, he added.

On the maritime front, Singapore's Ministry of Transport said Malaysia announced the change to Johor Baru port limits in a notice in the Federal Government Gazette on Oct 25. Over the past two weeks, vessels from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and Marine Department Malaysia have also repeatedly intruded into these territorial waters, the ministry added.

put the water stuff aside.

the airspace issues we really on the losing side.

its their airspace in the first place, now is already 2018 , bring up any promise from the early 70s make no different.

they didnt even mention any thing about cutting our plane off.

only controlling back their own area, and we feel our balls squeeze liao.

This guy always up to stir SG. Threaten us water price, causeway bridge, and now these issues.

Madhatter lost face during his recent visit to Singapore with his water tariff & crooked bridge issues being ignored. So revenge time and put pressure on Singapore to give in. Typical Madhatter style.

Singapore should now start flexing its muscles and call his bluff by firing on ships crossing over the original water limits and see if he has got balls to escalate the situation. He is gambling on we backing off .

See it from their pt of view:

Water price - johor has been experiencing their own water shortages and they are practically giving us the raw water that they have

Crooked bridge - the current landbridge at the causeway doesn't allow for marine traffic to johor ports. Singapore is being selfish and protective of our own ports but what about msia's interest? We can refuse to build an oversea bridge and keep our land portion and they build their crooked part - anything wrong if they pay for it?

Don't know the legality of it but on the surface, they have many ways to tekan seletar airport.

Just need to designate 1 field in pasir gudang for kite flying competition every Saturday and drone flying hobby on Sunday. Inform Seletar 1 day in advance. GG already.

I think the move to Seletar airport is stupid by Singapore. The flight path is either towards Malaysia and disturb them or towards amk Yishun Sekang.

We can point the ils southwards but we choose it to point it north without even getting permission from Malaysia. Informing them is not the same as they giving us permission...

They are quite careful to move a Malaysian airline to Seletar airport to test water. The act of moving an airline will force a response from Malaysia and maybe negotiations can start. The only airline that suffer disruption is firefly....

I still think Seletar is a stupid place for airport .

You are seated on a long flight to somewhere.

The guy next to you has his legs open wide.

It intruded into your space.

He thinks it's chummy.

You think it's a violation of your space, the money you paid for your seat.

What do you do ?

We are just a small red dot to them. Yes....We may have a  powerful armed forces in Asia.....But when it comes to nego, Singapore still needs to bow and be humble to them.

not say we small we need be humble.

must see wat situation.

like this airspace case, we need them to do us a big favour

(we want to use their space, and we want control over it).

until 1 day when we dun need this favour from them, they will forever use it as a bargaining chip against us
