The report stated that he was reversing his car and it bump into the kerb.

 

My guess is his rear tyre went over it and landed behind it. He revved his car to let the rear tyre mount over the kerb and back in front and the car shot forward. If its true, he was guilty of losing ctrl of his car and his action injured the people in the shop.

The CNA report says "A mechanical inspection conducted on Lim's car found no evidence of mechanical fault or abnormality."

i read that he reverse to park than move forward, that was when it happened.

I had the same thought passing through my mind. Yes there were grievous consequences to the injured parties.

 

But there was no malicious intent in the act. That is why it is called an accident. If it was speeding, or drink driving, I would say, serves you right. For the judge to pass a jail sentence and for the VP to lose his career over a momentary lapse of concentration or panic is not reasonable.

 

Even if the judge wants to send a message to drivers to be holier-than-thou behind the wheel, this is not the case to do it with.

SINGAPORE: The vice-principal of Beatty Secondary School was sentenced to 10 days' jail and banned from driving for 30 months on Wednesday (Dec 26) for crashing his vehicle into a market last year, injuring three.

Lim Soon Wai, 52, pleaded guilty to causing grievous hurt to 58-year-old florist Yeo Lee Eng and her friend Toh Cheng Hai, 66.

Another charge of causing hurt to Ms Sri Atun Lestari, a 33-year-old Indonesian domestic worker buying flowers from the stall, was taken into consideration.

The court heard that Lim was trying to reverse his vehicle into a car park lot at the hawker centre at Block 50A Marine Terrace past noon on Dec 9 last year.

While he was reversing into an empty lot, he switched gears to drive forward, but could not control his car. It surged forward, mounting a kerb and crashing head-on into a stall selling flowers.

The impact threw Mr Toh on his back, while the two women fainted upon the crash.

The three victims were taken to Changi General Hospital, with Mr Toh sustaining a crushing injury to his foot, which is now deformed and permanently disabled.

The florist fractured her ankle and sustained a partial tear in a shoulder tendon, while the maid at the stall suffered from giddiness and an abrasion.

A mechanical inspection conducted on Lim's car found no evidence of mechanical fault or abnormality.

The judge granted Lim a deferment of his sentence till Jan 15.

In response to Channel NewsAsia's queries, the Ministry of Education (MOE) confirmed that Lim was still employed by the ministry. MOE added that it takes a "serious view" of misconduct by its employees.

"(MOE) will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against those who fail to adhere to our standards of conduct and discipline," said a ministry spokesperson.

"As Mr Lim is an MOE staff, we will review the case based on our internal disciplinary processes."

The COO of SMRT was caught drink driving and jailed for 2 weeks. But he still managed to keep his job. 

 

Not sure if MOE can adopt the similar approach or not.

Well we are not perfect and we ourselves make mistake at times , he just had an ass luck and shit happen at a wrong time. Give him a chance and let him move on.

Not sure if the above MOE statements are relevant to this case. Are they really looking into VP's moral and integrity which may have caused this accident to happen? Or is MOE making a generic statement just to say something.

Quite pity him actually. According to Wan Bao, this vice principal just got divorced, 3 daughters still schooling.

1 of the daughters is currently studying oversea. His burden must be quite heavy.

 

Hope he doesn't lose his job. Anyway all the accident victims have already forgiven him, none of them ask for or pursue  

for any compensation.
