Singapore's decision to cane a Briton for drugs offences was condemned by a former Cabinet minister. London-born Ye Ming Yuen was originally facing the death penalty but the capital charge against him was dropped because the net weight of drugs involved was below 500 grams, the quantity that warrants execution in Singapore.

 

Priti Patel said the punishment for London-born Ye Ming Yuen was reminiscent of the Dark Ages. So UK is now saying their laws are modern and correct? I understand they still have such laws as 'The head of any dead whale found on the British coast automatically becomes the property of the King, and the tail of the Queen' and 'It is an act of treason to place a postage stamp bearing the British monarch upside-down' 

 

Maybe she would like to also review them?

Maybe they should get their act together to deal with an increased in crime before criticising others.

For example, Cannabis is still illegal in the UK. But because of a lack of manpower (to use the fund for other uses), police will usually not arrest you if the amount is small i.e personal consumption. There are so many knife crime and an increasing shooting incidents in London. Gangs are getting bolder cos police are generally toothless. Illegal immigrants also have an higher chance to remain in the country even if they are stopped by the police.

I personally saw police giving illegal immigrants transport fee and a note with the address of border control written on it and tell them to report there. Police do not have time to bring the illegal immigrant there and border control also do not have the manpower to do so.

Why doesn't she pressure Xi Jinping to remove their firing squad over the drug offences by Robert Lloyd Schellenberg instead? [rifle]

 

As a human right activist, does she prefer firing squad over 20-year prison sentence? [laugh]

They should ask illegal immigrants to volunteer to police themselves - anyone successfully capture and bring 300 of their peers to border control will automatically qualify to be British citizen plus bonus.  Then can reduce the illegal problem by 99.7%.

Anyway I doubt the average Briton cares when the convicted person here is asian, not ang moh.

 

Interestingly, just over a year ago, there were not just one but three Britons sentenced to jail and caning, but no protest at all - maybe because viet descent?

SINGAPORE: British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt raised the case of a drug smuggler who was sentenced to caning after being arrested in Singapore to Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, a spokesperson for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said on Sunday (Jan 12).

“Our consular staff have been assisting a British man and his family since his arrest in Singapore in 2016.  We strongly oppose the use of corporal punishment, such as caning, in all cases. 

"The Foreign Secretary personally raised this with the Singaporean Minister for Foreign Affairs earlier this month," the spokesman added.

Mr Hunt was in Singapore for a two-day official visit from Jan 4 to 5.

In response to a query from Channel NewsAsia, Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said that British national Yuen Ye Ming was first arrested on Aug 5, 2016. He was then convicted on Jan 17, 2018 and released on court bail, pending his sentencing.

While he was out on bail, Yuen was arrested again on Feb 20, 2018 for committing similar drug-related offences.

"Yuen was sentenced to 20 years in jail and 24 strokes of the cane for drug-related offences, including drug trafficking, drug consumption, and drug possession," MHA said.

MHA added that Yuen’s caning has not yet been carried out: "The claim by Yuen's sister that was reported by the Daily Mail, that we were going to proceed with the caning and then had halted it, is patently false."

The Daily Mail report, published on Jan 11, claimed that Singapore prison authorities did not proceed with the caning sentence in December as Yuen "exclaimed it was against his human rights".

MHA said that Yuen has been visited by representatives from the British High Commission, as well as his family members.

"Yuen committed the crimes while he was in Singapore, and must bear the consequences of his actions in accordance with our laws," the ministry said.

I do understand a law of a country is a law

 

but laws are man made and changes with the time

 

 

yesterday we put into law commit x crime get hang

today law change no hanging for x crime

surely a live cannot be traded like commodity

 

 

politicans who help crave out laws should be made accountable

their ego get bruise go to war

soldiers (someone son or father) die 

then some years on

two countries become great friends

eg Japan and America

 

killing for whatever reason is a crime

but when they courts say hang is OK

why one type of killing is ok but another type is not ok

i am sure if we put our politicians on the roster to pull the switch to activate the floor trapdoor, there would not be hanging as a punishment

Certain crimes we need to be very harsh. I support law on murder, drug, etc. Human right also need to look into how these culprits actions affect those affected right too ok.
