Full spec airbags for all PHV/Taxi

I advocate Taxi/PHV should be regulated to have equipped with a minimum in-car safety standard. To me, it is their very basic social responsibility to make sure the car is as safe as possible.

As public transport, shouldn't they have responsibility to the safety for their passengers? Everytime a taxi/PHV involved in an accident, the driver is the only one responsible. Shouldn't the Taxi/PHV rental companies have responsibility?

Full spec SRS is the most basic one. Why they are not equipped with full SRS specs? Are they really not affordable with Singapore standard of living?

Most passengers sit at the back seat. Curtain airbags could have saved life and avoid serious injuries, including the Commonwealth Avenue West accident at 19 Apr 2018, should the taxi was equipped with curtain airbag.

(To the victim family,

Sorry to bring up this painful lost. My thought is with the young lady. My intention is to do something to prevent similar incident in future.)

one can argue why public bus no seat belt etc..

and the next is at what cost public willing to pay for all these extra safety features as all investment on such features/equipment someone need to pay for it..

Sadly safety in cars do come at a cost. The more airbags will bring about additional cost to the omv, I mean you know how our car tax is structured. I believe the change will come only when the cost of car safety is not inclusive into the tax structure. But is it possible here?

We can only hope as time goes by safety in cars come standard across the range that is even for entry models. Hope lah.

Most accidents along the roads are due to speeding, abrupt lane change or tail-gating.

Those at junctions are usually blind spots or failure to stop at red light.

Air bags could only lessen a severe impact to a slight extend, so it is better to change the motorist behaviour first via more enforcement and refresher course.

Although airbags are only effective within certain speed limits but having one is still better dan having none.

For this case if your line of sight is blocked just dont take the risk, wait for the lights to change in your favour so that you may make the turn safely. But we also have to consider the taxi driver's attention on the roads since they on average spend so much time driving. Things like driver's age, fatigue and etc do make a difference...not just airbags alone.

Lets be clear. 6 airbags and more are already standard in most if not all new cars these day, including cheapest models in most countries.

But evidently many ADs in SG still think their cars can sell by the badge alone and thus specially order their cars with side airbags delete to keep their profit margins as high as possible.

And to make matter worse, there are no laws from LTA in making side/curtain airbags mandatory for all pax cars and SUVs, or pickups for that matter. In fact, it is entirely LEGAL to sell an airbag less new car in SG today if you want. There are none only becos of peer pressure so even the most greedy AD still offer dual front airbags as standard

There are also laws from LTA making other active safety features eg lane departure warning, blind spot detection, 360deg cam and Auto Emergency braking mandatory. Even bolehland requires AEB to be made a standard feature from now on. And u can actually find it on their crap Perodua these days too.

In SG, locally fitted fake leather, fake wood, chrome everywhere are more important than all these safety features la.

For our taxis, you do know that even the i40 came with just 1 airbag when the pte version had 7. CDG took extra effort to make sure the airbags count are kept to min to keep their taxis as cheap as possible. the old NF Sonata actually had 0 airbags. It wasn't until the current Prius and Ioniq that they gave in to public pressure and equipped the 2 hybrids as such

Talk about airbag?

Why don't you talk about rear passengers not belting up?

If not belted up, give you 100 airbags also no use la!

The way they drive PHV and taxi really need airbags.

The way to do this is ask the company to let customer choose which cars they want.

Cars with airbag or not.

Maybe put in the app. Minimum numbers of airbags.

Let the customers decide.

:D

Maybe 6 airbags charge $1 more.

For my MIL I will just go with the cheapest.

0 airbags

Cost is defintely one of the bigger concerns for the taxi company cos they not just buying one or two vehicles they are buying a fleet of them. One additional feature will come up to a big figure no doubt. I think it goes w/o saying what they will do. If basic cost go up, rental of the taxi will also increase... in short, a lot of ppl will be affected.

To me some things are still within the control coming from the driver even if the car they are driving do not come with the full safety features. Bulk of the responsibility is still on their shoulders. As drivers we should have that sense of responsibility whenever we drive. Accidents like this can be prevented.

Hmmmmmmm ...... [sly]

Can some smart scientist design a 'force shield' to install in all cars. In collision, they bound off one another....   ^_^

Like Dark Vader fighter, protected by shield .. :secret-laugh:

That would be expensive.

How about just put bigger bumpers like curvy ladies have?

I do agree with ur statement & thou I know what u are driving at is that even a budget conscious national car has the min safety aspects. But using "crap" will be alittle offensive to the brand & its users but I can understand being carried away by the substandards of regulatory outweighs our emotions at the moment of typing. No hard feelings here. Edited by Unfazed

Totally agree. Most important startoff should be attitude fr driver & passengers.

No car would be the safest car in the hands of a dangerous or reckless driver.

No car would be the safest car for passenger when they refused to even use the longest & most basic safety belt.

Stats hv shown that safety belts is the first safety precaution that can prevent lotsa accident.

The vast additional safety features thou hv bcum almost if not a must are vastly improved safety features.

It doesnt mean that with all added & modern safety features, one no longer need to put on seatbelt.

Same goes for driver, doesnt mean we can rely on all modern features that we can even not look into our mirrors when changing lanes for eg.

That's why must support ADs that just put 6 airbags in everything now.

And Subaru/MI has eyesight in every model?

Unfortunately, given our market, safety package as standard will take years to implement as it's currently reserved for top tier trims.

But it's kinda hard to choose a taxi vs a PHV based on airbag choices. Unless it becomes an active part of a customer feedback or whether they will choose to take another providers vehicle.

I think having a more stringent driving licence standard with regular refresher requirement along with less yearly renewed driver improvement points for Taxi/PHV drivers are much more effective in improving overall passenger and road safety for everyone.
