Sound Proofing the car

Sound proofing for audio entertainment in a car don't make sense to me.

The car's environment is supposedly design to have the driver aware of his surroundings. Sound proofing means you numb one of the senses. The car's acoustic is also not suitable becoz of the tire noise, outside road noise and what's not. You will not get your ideal acoustics no matter how you sound  proof it.

If you are doing sound proof for the car's roof so as to soften the noise when it rains... I mean that's alright to do. For audio enjoyment might as well do the sound proofing in your bedroom. It's a more ideal environment.

I agree.

As a driver, I would like to hear what is around me too. For eg, motorcycles in my blind spots.

So far not done any sound proofing in my years of motoring.

Might not make sense to you, but like you said, the car isn't the ideal concert hall, but sound proofing the doors will help the speakers perform bettter. Think of it like jumping upwards on a flat solid ground compared to jumping upwards on loose sand. You just jump higher.

Also, if my bedroom could transport me to office, then to dinner, then to my living room again, i would also soundproof it. Immediately.

Sound is brought about by air flow. The air well in the car door is small and narrow. Installing sound proofing material only improve the acoutics a little bit.

Sorry. I really don't get the ah beng analogy they had theorised to convince ppl to sound proof their cars. I only know of how shapes and airflow can manipulate sounds.

My comments.

Adding material to the door is actually damping it and reducing the resonances so that the speaker mounted can sound better. People usually call it soundproofing but the intention and outcome are not to reduce the soundwaves passing through it in any direction. And it doesn't, at least not in a meaningful way.

Adding "soundproof" material to any parts of the car has different purposes, to different people. For example soundproofing the roof main objective is to reduce rain noises. Soundproofing the wheel arch is to reduce noises from the tyres or water splashing there on wet days. Soundproofing the front firewall reduce noises from engine bay coming into cabin, same for the boot.

Anyway, it is understood that you can never make the car totally silent from outside driving noises. You tackle each part of the car to reduce particular noise or reinforce the audio system. You will not be able to filter out horn sound and motorbikes noises so there is no safety issues. Otherwise, those expensive luxury cars should lose all their top safety ratings.

People do spend alot of money on car audio even though the car is not a good acoustic environment compared to a room. It is because they spend alot of time on the road. I am originally a home audio person but nowadays i spend much more time listening to music in the car than at home. So it is very worhtwhile I spend some resources on my car audio.

I must say I'm not a multi-tasker. If I'm on the road I focus on driving. Music helps to keep me relaxed and calm but most of the time I can't recall what is playing in the background. Anyway I'm on the radio most of the time and keeping a look out on road traffic reports. I can't really sit back and enjoy whatever is playing. I can only focus on one thing at a time.

This afternoon one of my employee tell me how he enjoys classical music in his noisy car....he wears a high-end noise cancelling wireless headphone when driving... i thought he was joking, he showed me that headphone later to prove...I think this is dangerous.

Soundproof car only reduce high pitch sound.. But low pitch sound still can hear.. This is apparently magnified when those Malaysian bikers speed pass us. Their exhaust.. Very irritating.

get those door rubber and diy. it might help a bit on wind noise. cheap and won't cost much.

SP can consider the 4 fenders. Probably cost you around $200.

save and go change to those quiet /comfort tyres. It might reduce the sound/noise bit.

lastlydrive slow with low rpm. Don ram your pedal. safe and slightly quiet a bit on engine noise.

$1000 plus does sound like a damn expensive "mod" to the car. Why?Is it the intensive labour involved?

sound proofing 4 wheel arcs of my car took the workshop 5 hrs, what u think lol

mainly cos they know i stingy with workmanship so they stick slowly and cut nicely..

Hi, JB sure have soundproof shop but I also don’t know where...

I can recommend a soundproof specialist in KL Malaysia though..

https://autofoam.net/

I have tried their Autofoam package and it works. The boss Desmond is a pro in soundproofing. Go WHATSAPP him to check on soundproof for entire car.

By the way I have done up near 2k of soundproofing in Singapore so it’s not cheap as labour cost in Singapore is expensive. If I had found out about Autofoam before I done the soundproof.. I would have done everything there.. well at least I did part by part so can be sure which portion works.

I started with sound proof of 3 layers on all 4 doors and front wheel arc, then after a few weeks found proof all floor in cabin, then finally a few weeks later boot and rear wheel arcs. All these done in Singapore shop.

After that still not enough, I was in KL for work and have some time and I went to do Autofoam on the chassis on the car which still further muffler up road noise.

Go contact them.

Hi, u able to share your price? I asked them for the rates and it doesn't seemed cheap. Not sure if it's due to the material used (drartex)
