People, Since Sunday my Air Con is making funny sound.

Damn worried that my compressor die. So go workshop, problem is confirm compressor, but to replace is to expensive for me.SO go to Air-Con shop to shoot in 2 bottles of Air Con compressor oil, sound level went down... YIPEE!!!!

Anyway, the shop boss told me that you need to shoot in the oil after 2 years of usage, for me I need 2 bottles and cost is $50.

So folks, better take some time to get some oil in there before teh air con dies on you. Cost of a brand new compressor for Octy.... $800 (around there) WITHOUT labour.

Also, for those who have follow my previous complaint that my driver's side is warmer then the passenger side. The boss can 'Modify' for me, just need to plug 2 pipe (for the heater). But he will only do it for me only when my air con got problem [:(]

Hi! there, Skoda_man,

Last Saturday, I went over to JB to replace my a/c compressor with a re-con one for RM250+ incl. labour. Last week, smelt something funny, a/c not cold, I thought the gas ran out. Stopped at carpark, pop my bonnet, switch on a/c, only the pulley turning, so went down to my a/c guy in JB, one look at it, he told me on Friday that the compressor was jammed.

Hi! there, Utopia,

New a/c compressors are quite ex., that's why I changed to a re-con one. Anyway, the shop that I use, quite a number of years since I had a Honda Civic GL.

The Octavia uses a Sanden air-con compressor OEM to VAG. There hasn't been any complains in the VW/Audi arena on the air-con. Perhaps this is a one off incident? According to Servo, the air-con on the Octavia is actually very reliable. I quote them "as reliable as any Japanese car". You may want to enquire from them the price of a new air-con compressor.

Hi! there, Utopia,

I don't have any idea how long the a/c compressor will last. For my car, I haven't had to do anything to it, other than to top up gas, for the last 4 years that I have the car. I'd think that maintenance cost should be an annual budget with either a deficit from your miscalculation or a surplus from being kiasu by adding in inflation as in the increase in petrol pump prices.

For my car, I've a reward system that I use which determines how much I'd do at my w/shop.

Hi! there, Octyman,

My car uses Sanden a/c compressor too, model SD507. As you've mentioned, it is very reliable, powerful, really cool & generally trouble-free. I've driven many different type of vehicles, only the Sanden doesn't give any problems, only praise from others who've sat in my vehicles. In our climate, a/c is a requirement ever since the first car with a/c hit our shores.

Hi! there, Mondeo,

From what Skoda_man's description, it would seem that the installation of the a/c was done wrongly, i.e. not enough oil used. Last Sat., at my a/c w/shop in JB, a Suzuki GTi was there too, he had the same problem as Skoda_man, back here in SG, the driver was told that the a/c compressor was a goner. But, with feedback & recommendations from others, he went for the first time to JB, and manage to find the a/c w/shop that I use.

As the a/c compressor works the same way as our car engines, i.e using pistons to generate pressure to move the gases to keep us cool, similarly, it uses oil for lubrication of the pistons.

Tks Paul... typically, how long can a compressor last?

Some said 3 years change once which means in the 10 year life span of the car... the compressor will die 3 times? And if its as expensive as the Octy at 800 bucks. Then we better count that expense as a "future expense" in the maintenance of the car.

From what i know is that compressor has some lubricating oil also... and if u use the right one..... your compressor should be able to last 10yrs.... with no problem...

Sanden is Japanese right? I believe they are OEM supplier for A/C compressors for most Jap makes. [;)]

Yes. Sanden is Japanese. But they also have European operations. E.g. a manufacturing plant in France.

Sanden products can be seen on cars from nearly all of the major motor manufacturers, including Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd, Audi UK, BMW Group, Citroen UK Ltd, Ferrari UK, Fiat Auto UK, Ford Motor Co Ltd, Land Rover, Lotus Cars Ltd, Maserati UK, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi Motors, Peugeot Motor Co plc, Renault UK Ltd, Rolls-Royce & Bentley Motor Cars Ltd, Saab GB Ltd, SEAT UK, Skoda UK, TVR Engineering Ltd., Vauxhall Motors Ltd, Volkswagen, Volvo Car UK Ltd

FYI, carpets in Octavia are made in Germany.

Yup, oil is added to the freon, which acts as the carrier. When pumping freon, make sure the man adds the compressor oil, also make sure that the correct type is used - IIRC the issue is seal compatibility, R12 oil is not compatible with R134 seals and vice versa. My previous sanden lasted 16 years before I sold the car. It was the coil which sprang a leak at the 12 year point.
