Tuning Principles

Anyone care to share experiences on basic tuning...I have an interest to learn.

Basic impressions & puzzling thoughts thus far (as extracted from other forums).

Air-Fuel Mixture:-

1) Stock settings tend to be overly rich - guarded measure by manufacturers to ensure engine doesn't "ping", even under heavy load.

- Too rich a setting tends to make the engine less "lively" and inhibit it from reaching high RPMs quickly?? Is this right??

- Too lean a setting could cause "ping"-ing; In addition, leaning out too much may cause one to lose torque, akin to revving but not moving??

2) Heard that stock fuel maps are extraordinarily rich at WOT settings (i.e. high RPMs) to prevent "ping"-ing. Leaning out the mixture in that band would help??

3) Should peak torque RPM be fixed with richest A/F mixture?? Or is peak torque not a factor in tuning??

4) Any other A/F mixture basics??

Ignition Timing:-

1) Whilst advancing timing is good, is it more relevant at higher RPMs or lower ones?

2) Any other ignition timing principles??

Do correct any misrepresentations - it's all in the name of education...:P
