Bro,

 

What do you mean by need to optimise? You mean something like defrag on computer? What will happen when overheated??

Optimise = format HD. All recorded programmes will be erased. I experience my hubstation hang afternoon recording many programmes for 3 months.

 

Overheated = Harddisk will down anytime. Got to send it to Thomson Service Centre at Hougang.

No cooling fan, somemore it sits inside my TV console... I usually open it to cool when I'm home... but its still ok, no defrag required for me... no hangs at least for the past 6 mths after their firmware upgrade. To be honest, I was sceptical at first becoz of the Thomson brand, which can be crappy... anyway, its more the software as opposed to the hardware...

 

As for other forums... well, some ppl can be more critical, maybe they have an axe to grind with StarHub or whatever.. I'd just get on with life.. complain so much also won't serve any purpose... its the same with broadband I guess... I switch from StarHub to Singnet more for the free Macbook than anything... initially I hated the service, coz its slow and downtime is frequent, of late, I must say they have improved somewhat.. or maybe I surf less these days...

 

Oh, one more thing, Hubstation gives you free 1 Mbps of internet service Free.. its useful for me... I use it to surf while I'm in my living room, but the speed is hopeless, so don't get too excited.

maybe they were expecting more as its not cheap [laugh]

 

it has some problems during its initial introduction.

after a few firmware upgrades, it got better.

 

sometimes when fast forwarding, when i press play, there is no sound for a few seconds.

better than before, when the sound can go out of sync.

 

another problem in the beginning was unable to recover back HDD space after deleting shows you've watched.

 

but after they solved these problems with firmware updates, its been relatively problem free.

 

my only problem now is, insufficient hdd space, and i can't add, unless i wanna void warrenty. [laugh]

I think you are right bro! Diff people have diff expectation. So if expectation is lower, less complain. For me, as long the set can function properly can liao!

I guess I may be reading threads that are talking about it when its pretty new. And as you say, with more firmware upgrades, they are better now. By the way, how do you do the firmware upgrade? Or Starhub send a signal through to upgrade for you?

they will send a signal for the setup box to upgrade, all you need to do is turn off the power for a few seconds, then turn back on for the new firmware to be effective.

 

they will flash the message on tv to turn on/off. [;)]

interesting, i've been using for almost a year, without optimizing hdd, and it hasn't hang yet.

 

nor any hdd failure.

 

I think I do many programmes recording. At least 5-10 programmes weekly.

 

The service centre advice man to perform optimise to prevent hang issue. I do not have overheating issue.

Wah, still need to send HDD for servicing ah?? I think the overheating is really a prob!

My set does not experience overheating issue. Only the hang issue.

 

Overall I am satisfied with Hubstation as I do not miss my fav programmes.

oic, my wife records 2 VV series show everyday, i record 2 or 3 series off axn/star.

the the occasionally.

 

i even got starwars 1 - 6 stored [laugh]

 

optimise will clears some shows that i want to keep [:(]

 

but starsux nowadays can't stream youtube smoothly [mad]
