hi Folks

 

anyone familar with turntables ?

i have a unused Bose lifestyle 3 and some old vinyls passed to me by a uncle

thinking of hooking up a turntable to it and making the Bose useful

 

if you know of any local forums to read up on ... will be most heartfelt appreciated !

You could try Echoloft but the forum is not stable, always available/non-available.

 

Another option is xtremeplace.

 

Besides the turntable, you will need to check that the stylus cartridge on the turntable (the rectangular object with a needle-like point) at the end of the tonearm is in working condition. You will also need to determine if the cartridge is a MM or MC type and must have a suitable photo stage (something like a pre-amp) to hook the turntable up to before connecting to a pre-amp.

 

Google will be your best friend here in reading up on how to hook up the TT to your existing music setup.

I think the important thing about turntabling is extensive creativity, as well as patience. You won't get everything on the first try. Keep experimenting, keep trying out every thing on your gear. I know this for a fact as I am a guitarist, bassist, drummer, pianist, cellist and violinist and just recently tried playing a turntable for my band. It was a great experience! You might also want to try out a MIDI Controller. Works wonders, much like a mini turntable. My bandmate uses one of those in gigs sometimes, never ceases to amaze the audience. Also, make sure you get a quality headset. I use a Sennheiser HD435.

^^I think the TS is planning on using the turntable for pure aural enjoyment and not as part of a band ensemble.

 

As such, different rules and equipment applies.

problem with turntables is finding the styluses...my turntable has been in use by my uncle since like the early 70s and i'm still using it today but seldom cos to minimise wear and tear...anyone knows where to get the letest LPs? HMV quite limited leh...

Cheap cartridges (Shure, Denon, Stanton, Audio Technica) can be easily purchased at SLT or SLS.

 

Higher end ones can be found at The Adelphi or purchased online.

 

There are quite a fair bit of LP shops in SG (some in Adelphi) and others scattered across the island. For new releases, I think it is easier to buy online.

mine is sony one and from the last time i went to SLT very hard 2 find..SLS confirm nothing there...

SLT 3rd floor where there is a shop that does tube amp and speaker repairs.

 

SLS 2nd floor AVITlink or something or the other. Some of the hifi shops on the 1st floor may carry cartridges too.

 

Burlington Square beside SLS is another option.

 

Best bet is still Adelphi.

Yup, SLT 3 rd floor have two shops sells old turntables needles and cartridge...higher end, I don't think so....after all, old LPs, normal low end cartridge will do
