Good question. Reliability and capability are limited by size and design. Notice that rotary engine is always small? And lesser parts may also mean that design/automotive engineers have lesser/limited areas for breakthrough.

Unlike normal piston engines, you can change many things to make improvements. And these changes are cheaper because they are individual mechanisms. [thumbsup]

On a further note, rotary engines run hotter than normal engines and F1 engines cannot afford high heat with prolonged run. High fuel consumptions also means more pit stops, which is detrimental to their race. [:)]

Earlier engines does not have sufficient cooling systems. Rotary engines run at high temperature so if cooling is compromised, then [bounce1] !!!

Adding things like turbos and aircons adds heat and load respectively.

The catch is.... rotary engine by itself is reliable. However, the overall design of the system that supports it must be good to make the whole car reliable. [thumbsup]

I believe we will see a better supporting system in RX8 than in previous RX7s. [:)]

haha.. maybe ur prof and my prof from different planet one cos my prof told us rotary engine isn't reliable as the wearout will cause critcal malfunction unlike reciprocating engine.

mmm.. interesting.. so we actually have two sources saying different things.. [sweatdrop]

anyway, i did read before rotary engine is more reliable becoz it has lesser moving parts. and the coolant part is also true [nod]

besides, i also read that the seal technology is not there to support bigger rotary engine.. [shakehead] if i remember correctly the biggest rotary is about 1.8 only? [confused] as to how true is these articles i really don't know [sweatdrop][sweatdrop]

Rotary engines indeed have less moving parts and in terms of reliability of couse lesser parts means higher reliability. But the conbustion chamber of rotary engine is far less reliable than reciprocating engine cos if u look at the way rotary engine works the edge of the rotor tends to wear out fast and this wearout can result in 'leakeage' of the conbustion chamber... So you need to replace the edge rather frequent...

oh i see.. now that's something new to me thanks! [nod][thumbsup]

Hahaha... Anyway, ultimately the car damn chio and damn powerful. Actually in terms of power-weight ratio, power-price ratio, and power-door ratio, all damn attractive. Imagine having 210 horses for S$129k, come with 4 doors, and looks really like an exotic car. [inlove][thumbsup]

Got money sure buy one. Dunno if Mazda will sell it soon.

Even cheaper than RX-7. But heard that RX-7 basically spent 7 mths in the garage doing repairs ahha.. don know how true...

I'd seen the RX-8 on the road, front and back view nice but not the side view...
