Difference between soundproofing material

Dear All,

Wondering what is the difference between foam type (Insulflex, Aeroflex) and mat type (Accumat, Dynamat, etc) material for soundproofing? Which is more cost effective and I believe both have different functions right?

I intend to soundproof my 4 doors and wheel arch, what material would be the most cost efffective?

ok , Accumat & Dynamat are bituman base sound proofing material used on door panel to reduce vibration which causes noise ,

Foam ( insulflex , superlon etc ) are actually used for refrigiration & aircon thermal insulation and are closed cell foam , for DIY purpose as it cheaper as compare to open cell foam like Dynaliner , it can be used to absorb low frequecy noise.

For a proper sound proofing u MUST used both material i.e Mat type plus foam type.

Hope i can slove yr query

hmm.....I do not really need solid sound proof for sound system.

I am looking more for external noise coming into the vehicle.

Which one is more important or best? Bituman or Foam??

Which one is waterproof and what is their cost like??

Thanks for the detailed information. Do does it mean that we should stick bitumen based material (Accumat, etc) onto the metal surface first then put on the foam subsequently over it?

Think it should be bitumen to lower resonance, thus reducing vibrations and foam to absorb noise (be it mid or high frequency). I don't think the foam will work for low frequency bass notes.

Pls do take note that.... materials which reduces vibrations... doesn't mean that they can reduce noise... they just prevent sound from being transferred.

Make sure u check whether is the material :

- Sound insulating?

- Thermal insulating?

- Sound proofing? (reduce sound.. able to convert sound energy to other energy)

So if the material is only "Sound insulating".. then it doesn't reduce sound... but rather... it blocks sound or reduce vibration. [thumbsup]

Frankly... sound proofing materials (reduce sound wave) is not cheap.... and the administering of it is also not easy.

So pls be wise.... and frankly... since we dunno how long we are going to keep the car... might as well not... save the $$ for holidays!! [thumbsup]
