Octivia 1.6M Needs Help!!!

Hi Guys, I'm new to this forum. My colleague's 2yr+ car have this very bad idling problem and the car sounds like a boxer-engine (tuk..tuk..tuk... tuk..) with the whole engine vibrating vigorously, it's even worst when the a/c is on. When driving, you can really feel the whole car vibrating with the engine very badly with the feeling of running on 3plugs instead of 4.I was told that it might be due to the Ignition coil, cable or sparkplug. Any one can share their advise and also when to get the spare parts? We thinking of DIY troubleshooting as lack of $$$, maybe start with the sparkplug cables and sparkplug, if it doesn't work, then we will look into the coil. I was quoted around 600-700 bucks as there might be more then meets the eyes. Thanks in advance

have u brought the car back to the dealer for diagnostic?

you can go to servotronics or CAS Sin Meng, they have the VAG tool and should be able to diagnoise the problem.

Nope, but the workshop which i sent the car to check up used the laptop program (Vag something)to pinpoint a O2 sensor fault. Other than that no fault code detected. The workshop manager also said should be the ignition section which is faulty.

i see i see... when i read about the engine vibrating badly, the first thing that come to mind is probably a mechanical fault, such as loose engine mounts. so the manager suggested u changed the sensor?

Nope, but he mentioned that the o2 sensor fault most likely because the car in bad shape (by the ignition most probably) which causes the o2 sensor to produce error reading. Where can I get the plugs and cables (at reasonable) price? Cash very tight now so must DIY try 1st before parting with a big chuck of $$.

could be, but i'm pretty sure it's the ignition cable or coil as i have this same case on another car some yrs back b'coz of a faulty sparkplug cable.

Thanks for your advice. BTW, need to clarify that it's not my car. I juz can't bear to see the car in this bad shape as if not resolved, the mounting etc might follow suit too.

Same thing happen to myself and a friend b4. First thing we felt was the drop in power in the car! Cant even reach 90 Km/hr & stall when going up slope!

Mine was resolved by the agent as car was under warranty due to a broken cable!

My friends was a Jap make, btw this is an unorthodox method ,

he did it by pulling out each cable 1 at a time, the engine stalled on every cable except 1. Replaced the cable and car was running fine.

 

I burnt a big hole in my pocket due to ignorance b4, & i hope it wont happen to you,

IMHO is to try afew reputable VAG workshop to diagnos b4 commiting to the repair,

each may give you diff opinions & you may post them for further advise.

Thanks for your advice too. I thot of checking the s/p cable by changing 1 at a time with the help of 1 good spare cable. I'm not brave like u pulling out to see whether car die boh but will start the car 1 time each for each s/p cable changed. Me had a nasty experience of the spark jumping directly to the battery when showing off to my friend the strong current because of the newly installed high volt coil. The whole battery exploded on my face. Luckily beside being "scalded" by the battery water, I was fine. So no more doing that for me, I better be safe this time round although my method is very time wasting.

u can use a screwdriver and place near the plug cable a gap of 1/2cm of less and see whether any electrical charge jump over. Its safe because the handle is insulated and best done in the dark, so its visible. Daytime cannot see.

 

That is provided your plug cable can be seen and assessable. The one that is odd is problem,or else just chg the set of new plugs, normal standard plug will do.

Hi Ckcorona,

Have similiar problems with my Octivia.

At 55000 km, the spark plugs cables went bad (running on 3 plugs), went to servo and got it changed.

Then at 63000 km, the trottle body got dirty and also causes idleing issues also, got servo to clean and it running ok since.

Servo is quite ok and not willing to change any parts unless they are sure it will solve the problem.

Go the servo and get your issue sort out.
