Alignment for the Octy

Hi brudders,

Wondering if any of you octy brudders out there have/had any problems with your alignment? I've been having to hold the steering about 10 degrees to the right just to have my car go straight since I took delivery of my car. CA has tried countless times to correct it but its still the same. Is this characteristic of the octy? I've never encountered this problem with any other make or model, though I've heard that this is characteristic of the 1st batch of "big small eye" merc e.

Please accept my apologies if this has been answered before in other threads but i din find the answer. [:/]

cheers,

eug

Hi,

I have experienced this before in my Alfa Romeo 164TS. There was nothing wrong with the car's alignment. It was later found out that my Dunlops tires were the culprit. Somehow I noticed that when I use a four channel grooves tires it affects the car.

Before i knew it was the tires, I did the usual, I got someone to check my car alignments, let go a little air on the counter to generate drag to balance, etc. FYI.

Hope this helps.

Ivan

Thanks Ivan, but i don't think it's my tyres. had the problem when i was running on the crappy tyres that came with the car as well as on my current michelin precedas. i've also tried varying pressures... but come to think of it, the precedas do have 3-4 channel grooves... hmmm... anyhow, will take mlada's advice and bring it to my usual alignment guys and see if it works... [sweatdrop]

Hi Brudders,

Just came back from adjusting my car alignment... still not done. Although generally speaking, I've got to hold the steering wheel about 5 degrees to the right for the car to go straight, there is still a fair amount of adjustment both ways while driving due to road conditions, so not so bad.

But the proposal that they gave me was to raise my left hand rear suspension by about 1cm to offset the general left-tend slope that the roads in singapore have. I said I'll think about it. What do you think bros? make sense? just out of curiosity, is the height of your rear wheel arches for your octys equal or is the left higher than the right?

Sorry for the trouble brudders and thanks in advance for the inputs...

Cheers,

eug

You are confused with our nicks brudder. mlada is not the nick, it's just a link to another skoda website. His actual nick is Virus.

Anyway, I think the left hand drift is inherent in our model, bcos of the weight distribution.

What I did was to increase the left side tyre pressure to counter the drift. [thumbsup]

But you can try raising the left suspension, tell us the result if you do it!

BTW, U interested in getting our club decal??

oops... sorry virus... [:p] my apologies... [sweatdrop] thanks for pointing that out to me steady...

so increasing pressure helps? did you do it for both tyres on the left or just one?

the guys at south east auto have been customising the likes of ferraris and lambos for local racing conditions for a real long time so i kinda trust what they say... but still i'd thot i'd think thru the logic for a bit... will be going back to fine tune and raise it tomorrow if needed. will let you all know the result after the fine tuning. I increased the pressure for both tyres on the left side.

As for decals, you can PM Lightspeed for more details as we are still doing research for it.

Back from my alignment guys... spent about 3 hours tuning and adjusting and finally... IT'S DONE!!! [thumbsup] Din raise any suspension though. Cldn't find suitable rubber bushings. So just played with the alignment adjustments till satisfied. Those guys at south east asia motors are a real patient bunch. they did a maserati in-between fine tuning my car... real cool car... so now, steering is as it should be but there is a slight left pull due to the weight distribution of the car. so to off-set that, i took steady's advice and upped the pressure on the left tyres. a 40kpi difference between left and right works for me. hope this info helps some of the brudders out there. Thanks for the input bro... I believe this piece of information is helpful to fellow Skodians out there...

Just find it weird though, that one must pump more air on one side than the other to solve the problem, is there no real solution to it?

Quite silly that you pay few thousands for a car which tyres require more air on one side [sweatdrop]

The problem is that the car's weight balance is set up for left hand drive road conditions, i.e. driving on the right side of the road and right incline for water drainage and so on, just like the bimmers and merc. Only difference for them it seems is that they have a vareity of height settings for their suspension rubber bushings so that the car can be adapted for use on differing road conditions. However, skoda only provides one set of rubber bushings at one spec. The alternative is to lower the front right suspension by about 10mm with reference to the left so that the tilt reorientates the weight distribution of the car. Unless of course the more well-travelled brudders out there can advise on where alternative rear suspension rubber bushings with a vareity of heights can be found?

But it seems only a very small number of the brudders experience this problem so perhaps on the whole its just down to manufacture QC?

Does this explain why my right rear suspension is lower than the rest of the car? [gossip]

Anybody else got the same thing as me? [gossip]
