  1. My personal comments in blue..... The curvy Verossa sports sedan, offering a luxury alternative to the Altezza, is more Alfa Romeo than Toyota. More AR than Toyota ? Sure or not ? The company is prepared for 4,000 orders in the first month through its Vista channel, settling down to 2,500 thereafter. Officials say there are no plans to sell the Verossa, which is based on the new Mark II platform, outside of Japan. The car offers many of the same features as the recently introduced Brevis but it targeted at a slightly younger, well-heeled audience. Sadly, the 'no plans' part isn't that true..... There are three powerplants on offer: an impressive 2.5-liter straight-six turbo unit offering 280ps; a naturally aspirated fuel-efficient direct-injection four-cylinder 2.5; and a naturally aspirated 2.0. Long criticized in Japan for its 'old man' (oji-san) image, Toyota is shedding bland older models in a so far successful change of image. Toyota has said it would launch 14 new models in 2001, nine of which have now been unveiled: the Runx and Allex (youthful versions of the Corolla), Soarer, Will-VS, Ipsum, Spacio, Altezza Gita, Brevis and Estima Hybrid. Success can be gauged by the fact the six of the 10 top-selling over-660cc models in June were Toyotas. Amazing - just look at the list of weird names they've got for cars.....anyway, looking at the Verossa, wonder if bland suits Toyota better.... The Verossa is designed to display that indefineable quality - emotion - that eluded Toyota in the past. Everything from the swooping lines of its sheet metal to the driver-focused design of the cabin, complete with chrome-rimmed circular blowers and jewel-like instrumentation, attempts to show the public that Toyota has more to offer than build quality and reliability. Huh ? Can anyone help interpret the marketing talk here ? Anyway, I find it interesting that Toyota's got quite a few cars specific for the local market - is the domestic market really THAT dynamic and big to warrant so many dirrefing models ?
