HKS comes up with a Sony Playstation 3 controller

The last time I recalled the HKS Hipermax was a name used for a set of HKS coilovers. These are nice expensive spring and shock absorber sets meant for the more popular Japanese performance cars but now HKS USA Inc. has teamed up with Interworks Unlimited Inc., a company that distributes gaming accessories, and have come up with a Sony Playstation 3 controller called the Hipermax III that is more suitable for all those car games of yours like the Grand Turismo series.

This new controller has an analog thumb steering 'wheel' on the left side and throttle and brake buttons on the right side. This removes the up -down function and basically keeps the left – right functions that we use to 'drive' the car in those games. The usual up,down, left and right buttons on the right side of the normal PS controller have been moved to the inner right side as it wouldn't be in used as much in a motor racing game. The throttle and brake 'pedals' are analog and it is touch sensitive as well as proportionate to the amount of input the gamer adds. All of the input is displayed via the funky looking gauge in the middle of the controller. It will be available in the United States only for the PS3 and is priced at US$54.99. Expect it to arrive over here soon.

Now this HKS Hipermax III is not a true replacement for the steering wheel and pedal setup that serious motor racing gaming enthusiasts usually use. It is however something like a half way option for those who do not want something bulky to carry around. A special controller like this actually makes sense as motor racing games like the Grand Turismo series, with its high level of realism, would work better with a specific controller like this. The official press release is stated below:
