Excel World Championships

In the never-ending debate about whether Esports are actually 'Sports', here's proof that you can absolutely make anything competitive.

Counterstrike? DOTA? Passé. May I introduce to you: Excel Esports.

Yes, it is almost exactly as quirky and bizarre as you imagine it to be.

On one hand, maybe it shoudn't be at all surprising. I feel like the Venn diagram of people who enjoy computer games and excel at Excel (too obvious a pun to make, sorry) probably overlaps significantly. And the sport (yes, I will die on this hill) attracts exactly the sort of people you imagine - nerds/geeks/whatever term you want to use.

But I also find it very humorous. The competitive setup is not dissimilar to what you might see at The International, complete with intense gamer PC setups, epic walk ins, teams with jerseys and sponsors. And don't just dismiss it offhand - the world championships have even been shown on ESPN.

And to take something so painfully serious as Microsoft Excel and have it turned into spectacle, well, I fully respect that.

I always believe that competitive-anything is good, because it serves to highlight and spotlight excellence. And whatever you may make of the field, excellence is something I think every can (or very much should) support and get behind.

And considering I have spent the best part of the last two weeks staring at Excel spreadsheets all day and am currently on the verge of smashing my head into a wall while concurrently clawing out my eyeballs, I HAVE NOTHING BUT RESPECT AND ADMIRATION FOR THESE GENIUSES.

  • How far can you get away from the world?

What is the most remote point on Earth?  Seems like a strange question to ask, but last night I was watching some stuff about AI chatbots and Israel-Palestine and feeling all sorts of existential dread. Which made me ponder: Just how far can you actually get away from everything?  Well, the question has two answers.  The actual most remote point on Earth is called Point Nemo. Situated roughyl 2,688km from the nearest piece of land, it is known as the oceanic point of inaccessibili
