On 3 Jan 2010, there was a special section on The Straits Times featuring cars that will arrive in Singapore during 2010. I was abit disappointed not to see the Alfa Romeo 159 1750 TBi.

The 159 1750 TBi made its debut at the Geneva Motorshow in 2009. The 1750 TBi engine is actually a 1742 cc turbocharged gasoline engine, which replaces both the 1.9 and 2.2 JTS naturally aspirated engines. Alfa revived the legendary "1750" label for this engine, hoping it to get recognition from its fans. The engine is pretty advanced, featuring dual-continuous variable cam phasing, second-generation direct injection and a revolutionary "scavenging" technology. The latter utilizes valve overlapping to enable a momentary inrush of air directly from intake manifolds to exhaust manifolds (while precisely delay fuel injection and ignition during that moment). This helps in waking up the turbocharger at low rpm, reducing turbo lag. Its maximum torque of 236 lb-ft is delivered at an incredibly low 1400 rpm and packs the power of 200 horses. This giving the four-cylinder 159 vastly improved top speed and acceleration while reducing fuel consumption at the same time.

It is a pity that this excellent engine is currently only mated to a 6 speed manual gearbox in the 159. In a country like Singapore where an automatic car is almost an automatic choice, this will spell bad news for sales figure. But never say never, let's pray that an automatic version will be offered and I am sure that it will attract a lot of attention at EuroAutomobile.

  • Why I bought Fanta Orange and hand carried it back from Germany

    - The curious case of the European Fanta - I paid 5 Euros for a small 500ml bottle of Fanta Orange and brought it on my carry-on bag, on a 13+hours flight to bring it back to Singapore. You might be wondering why; after all we can get Fanta Orange in Singapore - it's a Chinese New Year staple! BUT NO! European Fanta is DIFFERENT! From its colour, to its taste, the European Fanta is unique and better, and I would say it tastes closer to Origina (which is like the best fizzy orange drink

A 20-year journey, an old passion rekindled

For us 90s babies, the Holy Trinity of Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network formed a big part of our childhood. The internet was just about coming into fruition, with the rise of a plethora of websites with numerous entertaining flash games and of course, the early days of YouTube. And though those things have come and gone, one thing in my life remained constant: My love for Pokemon. I first got into Pokemon 20 years ago, and I remember exactly how it went down. Let me set the

    Musings about the Pomodoro Method

In a hyper-connected mega-city, where time seems to tick at a relentlessly brisk pace and where distractions are aplenty, pondering the art of productivity and focus is inevitable. In fact, it’s almost become a necessity. No wonder so many listicles have been written to point us in the right directions. Different methods works for different folks, of course, and when I was in my final year of university, I was introduced to a method that I regularly return to still: The Pomodoro Method, a d

Why oolong tea could be the superior drink of choice at lunch

Coffee - without sugar! - has long been (and still is) my go-to option to accompany my lunch. Amidst a larger 2025 goal of reducing the number of cups of kopi-o kosong I gulp down a week, however, I’ve recently thought about how my lunch experience can be switched up slightly with yet another sugarless drink: A can, or indeed bottle of oolong tea. Oolong tea is said to offer a perfect balance of flavour and functionality - perfect not just for complementing one's meal but also reinvigo
