Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 20, 2002 Share April 20, 2002 I did my thermostat change and cooling system flush today and when I removed the old thermostat out of the housing the bladdy thing snapped in two! 5yrs and although the car warms up and runs at normal temp, this breakage of the old thermostat spelled trouble if I had waited longer for the change. I guess 4-5yrs is a good time to change the thermostat, just my 2 cents. ↡ Advertisement
Fastforward Neutral Newbie April 20, 2002 Share April 20, 2002 Wow Can you do your own servicing? I have never heard that you need to change the thermostat. Will keep that in mine. Scratched my rims today. Damn seem tia. Not very bad but bad enuf. What do you reccomend I do that I can DIY without going to the spray painter. Too small a job for them. Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 20, 2002 Author Share April 20, 2002 I DIY most of my brick maintenance, pretty simple once U get the hang of it. As for your rim scratch, try using a medium grit sandpaper wrapped around an eraser and sand the scratch. Follow that with a fine grit sandpaper sequence again and finish by using silver touch up paint on the scratch.
Schroder Neutral Newbie April 20, 2002 Share April 20, 2002 Wow Was it jus the plastic or the internal part? Mine miata thermostat broke once. The plastic portion that is. I jus glue it back with the all mighty super glue
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 20, 2002 Author Share April 20, 2002 The internals are all metal and it's the top part broken off the bottom spring seat of the thermostat
Fastforward Neutral Newbie April 21, 2002 Share April 21, 2002 Thanks for the tip on how to recover the scratch on the rims. I will try that later.
Fastforward Neutral Newbie April 21, 2002 Share April 21, 2002 Hi Turbo Brick Fix the scratch on the rim today. Looks almost like new. If you use water with the sand paper when sanding, you can obtain a really smooth finish. This is what most of the spray painter do. Thanks
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 21, 2002 Author Share April 21, 2002 Yeah wet sanding gives a smooth and high shine finish, do add some top up paint to protect the surface from brake dust else U'll have brake dust pitting into the sanded portion. Fastforward Neutral Newbie April 21, 2002 Share April 21, 2002 Yeah, I sprayed over the sanded portion but hard to get the right colour. Use Metallic Silver which is about 80% matching
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 21, 2002 Author Share April 21, 2002 Generally and metallic silver will do, close enough and doesn't contrast much.
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 22, 2002 Author Share April 22, 2002 I realised that the thermostat changed improved my warmup timing significantly! Used to be around 10mins but now down to 3mins warmup!
Fastforward Neutral Newbie April 22, 2002 Share April 22, 2002 Hi Turbo Brick By the way, have you had any problems with your Turbo? Do you know the lifespan of LPT? The new LPT turbo are made of ceramic so don't really know if they would give. What are the general symptoms
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 22, 2002 Author Share April 22, 2002 Turbos tend to outlast the COE of your car, so no worries bro!
Cktan Neutral Newbie April 23, 2002 Share April 23, 2002 Hi TB, any need of maintenance on the turbo? Do U need to change the oil/whatever they use inside? What abt a turbo timer to cool the thing down after U switch off the engine? Oh one more thing. Abt transmssion. Where do you do that flushing or draining? Want to do that b4 the 60k mark. BTW, when is the next meetup beside the May one? Want to see Fastforward's brick also. Cheers, CK
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 23, 2002 Author Share April 23, 2002 The turbo needs minimal maintenance, your regular oil change will renew the turbo's oil too. The turbo timer is not necessary unless U do a fast and furious run into your house everytime, if U do a hard run before shutting down just let the engine idle for a minute or two before shutting down. Our turbos are water and oil cooled so minimal idling time is required. I do the tranny flush myself with Syn ATF, got a batch of AMSOIL ATF coming in for my tranny soon. BVO does a thorough tranny flush as well, they are at Blk 15 Sin Ming Ind Est, look for Bernard if U're wish to do it there. I'll organize a brick meetup soon
