Bro...

If you are using the Garmin GPS Receiver, at the moment, some bros in Malsingmaps were trying to compile the Postal Code for Singapore based on the Singapore Hardcopy maps..

They are converting those postal code as POI (Point of Interest), which can only be downloaded to Garmin Based GPS Receiver. Once you have those, you can do the Postal Code search...

For non-Garmin based GPS Receiver, have to wait till the project finish and they convert those POI to be embeded directly to the Image file of the Maps before able to use it...

The Garmin maps acquire through the sites of Malsingmaps will have a lot of details. You can choose to search based on the many categories... Services (Banks, Petrol Kiosks, etc), Lodging, Shopping, etc...

Tried putting in Malaysia and Singapore Map into the IPaQ 6515 I'm using and search for Genting or Kuantan's hotels, it will display and able to help to route all the way...

Tried driving to Berjaya Times Square KL 2 weeks ago with the help of the maps and PDA without any problem...

Tried using the GPS while I was in Bangkok 2 months back... able to show most of the place of interest.. the only drawback, sometimes we don't really know the place's name translated to English (Roman)...

Quite Fun... nowaday, even in Singapore, I seldom use my Harcopy map... just key in my PDA for the address/location... after that follow all the way... the only thing, sometimes deviate due to ERP, Jams, etc... Anyway, the Garmin able to re-calculate the routes and show us new routes...

For those PDA which come with in-build GPS, normally they will bundle it...

If not, you can either choose to buy those commercial GPS Maps/SW such as MapKing, KingMap, Agis, etc...

Or, if you want to play around, you can try to install based on the tutorial in malsingmaps... step by step... quite fun and challenging... learning new things everyday...

The other sites which will have a lot of info will be www.ppcsg.com at the GPS Arena... Those will discuss specifically on those PocketPC based PDA and the GPS... can get more advise there....

Hi Syshi, look like you are a fan of malsingmaps and ppcsg. Me too also checking up the news/updates there. laugh.gif

Hi Guyver, my badsweatdrop.gif, should say big screen supporting high resolution (XGA). As what Syshi had mention, (by me: you can't have free lunch, but) sure you can find free maps at malsingmaps. Quite updated roads for sure. Only some small roads in small town of Malaysia not found, new small roads.

Yap, I am using a old Acer N30 PDA, mounted in my car for GPS usage. Been using around in Malaysia, so far pretty useful to get around with it. Their POI database are sure very useful. Help you to have a quick view of the surroundings.

Hi Optraman, additional to what Syshi had mention, Garmin products can have different countries' maps for your usage. Not only to be use in Johor. Most of the maps are broken down into small size for fast accessing of maps. Users can join more maps to form one big map and download into your Garmin GPS (depending on the availability of free memory).

Not to worry, GPS is not difficult to use or understand (less coordinates calculation) laugh.giflaugh.gif

Once you get hold of this, it is very interesting.

With Regards

Hi Bro,

Sorry to dig out the old thread. I currently have a HP iPaq. Im thinking about getting a GPS receiver, but wanna play with the Map software such as Garmin Que or Mapking. I went to Garmin site trying to download Que, but it only has the update not the orginal installation. Any idea where can i download Que version 2.7 or 2.8? BTW, 2.9 is the latest update and u will need need to install the prior version b4 the update.

Or is there any other place to download free Mapking software?

Any other bro has a clue?

Thanks in advance.

www.malsingmaps.com

Follow the steps to install in the wiki..

Basically you will need:

1. PatchIMG (Free) - This is to combine maps into 1 image files to be use for the map

2. GPS Proxy (Free) - This is to interface the GPS receiver with your PDA (if separate receiver and PDA)

3. Garmin Que (Copyrighted - but can use free) - This is to display the maps accordingly and routing... it can have voice navigation too...quite useful...

4. Maps (Free) - contribution of the people in malsingmaps (MALaysia-SINGapore-MAPS). So, if you go many place often, can help to contribute. Some of the maps also build in the speed traps. Anyway, at the moment, some of them doing the project to incorporate the postal code into the maps (work in progress)...

bro, i think some previous thread have discussed abt this.. anyway, there are a few options.. need your advice..

1) Order online from Amazon.com, Nuvi 360 cost abt S$835 + postage (maybe using VPost cheaper).. however, webby state can only deliver in US, issit illegal for us to buy? This one comes in US map.

2) Called up dealer in SG, quoted S$1350 for Nuvi 360, c/w full europe map, SG map and Malaysia (Johor) map. If need whole malaysia map, add another $40 for service charge (downloading from Malsing).

Is the price S$1350 acceptable??
