Mix and match components for front comp set

Looks like some of you out there are familiar with getting individual components separately in a front component set, and either running it active or with your existing passive crossover facilities.

Could someone help start me off - what are some brands and models to look out for?

In terms of cost, do you think you can achieve the same quality (i suppose we're all looking for high quality) of sound from commercial sets at a lower price, or it probably would end up higher? Buying individually skips paying for the passive cross, so I suppose there are small savings in this department? But the downside is if u're running passive, ur cross has to tailor to the speaker characteristics, so that means spending $ again.

Do you think there are differences in fundamental design of home drivers compared to car drivers? the dispersion characteristics etc, the way they design for close-up listening in a car as compared to sitting a few metres away in a home?

I've heard prices of a good-sounding 3-way system, I believe it might be Dynaudio, going for something like $1300-1400. I wonder if assembling a set myself would cost so much for a similar sound ...
