Proposal for Castrol Syntec 0W-30 (GC) Group Purchase

Hi all,

This VW503.01 rated oil has been well-received by VW owners in the USA. In Singapore, Trex101 is the person who imports the oil. Some of the users of the oil, including King, have given the thumbs-up for this cost-effective oil.

Having spoken to the importer, there is a possibility for a reduced price for the oil.

Normal price: $15/quart

Group Purchase price: $13.50/quart (min 120 quarts)

I am doubtful if the orders from SOG will be able to meet the min. order quantity to qualify for the group purchase price. According to Trex101, some of the car enthusiast groups are able to fulfil the minimum 120 quarts without problem e.g.

- FD Civic Group

- Chevrolet Group

Proposals:

1. We can organise a group purchase for the oil and gauge the response first within SOG. If the quantity we require falls short of 120 quarts, we can consider tagging along the group purchases with the other car enthusiast groups. However, we will need somebody who knows member(s) of the groups to facilitate the group purchase.

2. We can consider importing the oil directly from USA for the benefit of all SOG and perhaps also VAGSG members. In this case, we need to find out:

- the distributor in US

- a cost effective yet reliable forwarder for shipping the goods to Singapore.

At $13.50 per quart, I believe Trex101 is still makiing a handsome profit out of this business.

Looking forward to your views.

It is a wonderful idea to pool together for economy of scale, and do note the expiry date after first opening it. Understand that CAS is doing this and using it too. Just changed my lub oil of this spec last week at S$78 including labour, filter and the few check points.

It was the VW spec 503.00 smile.gif. However, if there are more of us doing this I can talk to the guy running it who is an old friend of mine, just found out last week.smile.gif

Do keep us in the loop for the Fuchs product. Fortress should be able to provide us with some info on the Castrol product in the days to come.

I believe the price of Castrol Syntec 0W-30 GC is monopolized in the Singapore market as there is only one importer. If we are able to secure other sources to get cheap, VW compliant fully synthetic oil for our Skodas, we should work towards that direction.

Anyway the oil is good for 6 months or 15000km whichever comes earlier. I see no point pouring in purportedly fantastic oils which cost a premium.

Will do on the Fuchs contact.

The monopoly may be in Singapore, Maybe we can get from my? Soleution?

I guess we all love our cars, and want the "best" for them. Even at a premium.

Can I ask what is the prefered brands that loungers are interested in getting. If it is Castrol, then I actively ask around. Let me know.

I have been searching other Skoda sites for oil recommendations for the 1.8T. Here is an interesting oil recommendation taken from Skoda UK.

http://www.skoda.co.uk/skoda3g/content/ext...ommendation.pdf

If I have not misunderstood the contents of the document, here are the conclusions I have drawn:

1. Weight 40 and weight 30 oils are suitable for the 1.8T

2. VW502.00 specified oils, which are predominantly weight 40 oils, are also suitable for the 1.8T, provided we change the oil at every 10,000 mile (16 093.44 kilometer) interval.

Based on our oil change patterns in Singapore (15,000km oil change interval or 6 months whichever occurs first), it does seem that we are following the QG2 fixed oil change interval regime.

Perhaps you can pop this question to either CAG, Servotronic if it is really mandatory to use VW503.0x oils on the 1.8T given our oil change habits here. CA will most probably ask us to stick to Mobil 1 Silver (5W-50) since this is the in-house oil carried by Cars and Cars.

Once this doubt is cleared, it is a matter of identifying the most cost-effective yet technically superior oil for the 1.8T within the weight 30 and 40 range. Ultimately, this means more choices for us.

Here is another site from US which suggests that VW502.00 oils are suitable for the 1.8T. However there is no mention whether these cars sold in US are QG1 or QG2 specified.

Other than Castrol, I have good experience with Liqui-Moly SYNTHOIL HIGH TECH 5W-40 (purple bottle) oil on my ex-Octavia TDI (in Austria). Liqui-Moly is formulated and produced in Germany. Forklift Enterprise brought in this oil previously. However, this shop has stopped importing this oil lately citing high costs as the main reason.

In my opinion, the following Liqui-Moly oils (VW502.0x and VW503.0x compliant) are options we can consider.
