SQ Sub - Recommendation?

Currently using a Soundstream Exact 10 inch sub powering by the Audison LrX1.400. Wondering for an upgrade to a 12 inch, what sub would be good and still be able to be driven by the Audison?

 

I was informed by my installer that for SQ Sub, it is prefered to be run at 4 ohms instead of 2 ohms. Any comments on it?

hmm... my preference is running in 2ohms though. not sure why your installer wants 4ohm. I get to maximise my amp and squeeze more juice with 2ohm subs.

The reason why he recommended 4 ohms instead of 2 ohms is because he is saying that with 4 ohms, it will have better control.

My installer has been doing it for so long. So I am taking his advice. But I want more comments from bros here as well.

Yr installer is right - the damping factor of the amplifier affects the ability of the amp to control the woofer. Halving the impedance also halves the damping factor. Hence at 4 ohms, the amp have better damping factor compared to 2 ohms. However damping factor is not an indication of quality - many other factors play their part. Also most amps design to drive subs are well designed to handle low impedance even down to 1 ohm. So realistically not a big issue.

My main worry is that my current monoblock only pumps out about 350W at 4 ohm. But at 2 ohm will be 680W.

 

At 350W, its not going be very powerful to be driving good quality sub like SW300, IDMax, etc. Therefore I am looking for a recommendation which my monoblock can handle. Dun intend to change the monoblock already.

Since you are happy with the LRx1.400, choose the best sub to work with it rather than the other way - choosing the best sub and worry if the amp can make it. Otherwise there will be no end. The SW300 should be a good option at 4 ohms. For DVC subs, you need to consider the combined impedance of the sub which complicates the matter somewhat.

I am happy with the Audison, thats why I am asking for comments on the sub that can maximise my amp. I am just worried at the Audison can do the SW300 justice. So I am looking for recommendation for subs.......

depending on how many channels u are playing. if u are playing 2-way front, your LRX1.400 can deliver up to 900W @ 1ohm (but will be damn hot), which is far more than enuf. however to be on the safe side, u can configure ur sub to drive at 2ohms which the 1.400 will deliver up to 650W which is sufficient for 2-way front setup. (my fren's IDMAX D2 sub wired to 1-ohm load with the LRX1.400 often goes into protection mode becos of heat. so heat management is critical here).

 

for 3way front, you might experience insufficient sub power, as the power delivered to the sub cannot catch up with ur front midbass. min should be 1kW for the sub for this case.

 

also, there's not fixed and fast rule that 4/2/1 ohm is ideal for subwoofer applications. it all depends on how much ur amp can deliver. and adding to the overall equations are the sealed/ported box configurations, T-S parameters, etc...

 

the SS exact subs are good SQ subs.

 

ur ride is a FD? mine is.... maybe can meet and lim kopi and tcss

I am playing front 2 way active. Not planning for 3 way. Like my initial question, will running the amp 2 ohms be affecting SQ?

 

If running 2 ohms is not going to affect SQ, I believe the 650W at 2 ohms which the Audison can pump will be good enough for quite a bit of subs.

 

I am driving a FD. If you free, lets meet up for kopi bro!

yes, i tink for 2way fronts, your existing 1.400 is able to keep u satisfied for as long as u play ice

 

but once u step into using IDMAX with the LRX1.400, you'll hear extended sub-bass u never heard/felt with a 10-incher....

But will 650W at 2 ohms make bring out the IDMax performance?? Will it be affecting the SQ quality to be running at 2 ohms??

a brandnew 12" is about 500~600+, while a 2nd hand one is going >400 (this sub has good resale value becos of its known performance)

Hard to find 2nd hand going in the market. And sometimes I am worried about 2nd hand may be abused, esp sub. So have to take care......

Bro can try Genesis A30 SQ sub easy to drive not a power hunger sub. Ur Lrx1.4 will drive it with no problem.
