No... most of them do not... Built-in jukebox management of something...

Neither do I. Is my question that hard to understand? Or my language is broken....

Don't mind me chipping in but Vblaster is just offering you alternative and pointing out the pros and cons of HDD HU vs one with Ipod support.

Yes, battery degrade over times but failure is still quite some times..

The chances of HDD failing is significantly higher compared to battery..

and the cost of a HDD HU vs one with Ipod support + one Ipod could work out to be cheaper..

Cars are starting to have more and more OEM HU and some are starting to come with Ipod support, so when you take this option, you might be able to bring your IPod over. Not so if you get a HDD HU.

hope that offer another perspective... you can also try going to some ICE installer to ask ard.

SgSoundSystem forum might give you better answer as well

You have amazing patience....

Anyway, sharing for the rest to know (not weihui as it's obvious a closed mind is not open to suggestions - pls do not reply to me), Alpine fullspeed costs.....NOTHING. Not expensive as alleged. The Alpine HU that is iPod fullspeed comes with the cable. That's all that's needed.

So iPod Fullspeed = EXPENSIVE = FALLACY.

Well... we have said what we need to say.. this is still very much a forum, so others can read and know more.. not just for TS..

Thanks for the suggestion... Certainly something new to me... Not some yester-year iPod connection that those "open-minded" iPod supporters still embrace (time to look for a new technology...)

a. so-called full speed control = EXPENSIVE

b. charged via bus etc etc = battery decays over time, they FAIL

c. iPod flash = 30GB flash? Maybe in the future...

d. Japan radio frequency etc etc... = already said import from Japan is not viable option... scroll up..

Thank you for your patience. The answer I am searching for is either yes there is, or no there isn't any YET.

Bro, some food for thought for you. Not trying to change your mind, but rather to give you some other reasons to give due consideration to other alternatives.

a) Price of a refurbished (with warranty) iPod Video 30GB is now S$268. The HU with FullSpeed control probably starts at around S$500. That's a total of around S$768 - 800. How much will the HDD-based HU set you back? Probably about the same or maybe even more if you have to include shipping costs if not bought locally.

b) Replacement battery for an iPod are ridiculously cheap these days. Let's assume it will cost you S$100 to replace the battery from Apple. That will be in like, 2 years time? 3rd party batteries start from S$20 onwards.

c) Yes, a 30GB player will definitely be HDD-based as well, but to replace the player is definitely cheaper than to open up the HU & change out the HDD should it fail. Unless you manage to find a HDD-HU that allows user-swappable HDD via some sort of dock or cradle. Which is next to impossible, IMHO.

d) Some USA brand names carry such HUs, but sound quality & reliability is unknown, as you know, most brands (even the big names) have their factories sited in China or South Africa etc, so QC is somewhat of a concern. If you get a local set like Alpine which offers the iPod control, at least you'd have a full year's worth of warranty. I highly doubt you'd get any sort of warranty with HUs imported in or whether they even have agents located locally. If need to repair, how? Send back to US or Japan or wherever? Cost even more right?

Basically, you know what you want, but it's not readily found in SG nor is it easy to get tech support. It's not cheap either, so IMHO it's better that you consider other alternatives. No point spending close to S$1K or so on a HU that you might have to toss out after a year or so. Remember, nothing is made like they used to these days. [;)]

By the way, I'm no Apple supporter. I'm using a Creative Zen Micro for my ride, connected via the "old-fashioned" way ; a cheap S$5 stereo-mini to stereo-mini cable to AUX-In. It's just easier than burning CDs & way cheaper than using any HDD or a HU that supports flash drives. [;)]

"Nothing is made like they used to these days."

That's the sentence.... especially when it comes to battery... and $100 dollars for battery replacement is not "ridiculously" cheap... 3rd party battery... refer to the sentence you quoted... you seriously don't wanna play with Li-ion nor Li-polymer batteries..

I am in consumer electronics design industry... I know what's what...

Thanks for the suggestion anyway...

Point taken. Thanks for reminding me that my 3rd party batteries in my Zen & cell phones can blow up at any time. Since you know full well what's what in the industry, I guess my previous posts can be counted as post-count-whoring. [laugh] Have a great day, mate. [;)]

I have been involved in supplier issues and I know how the system works.. Most of the time, there is no 100% incoming and outgoing check... and sometimes, suppliers change recipe without telling.. The only time you will know is field return...

Man, I'd say go with the approach with a HU that can do everything.

Best is can connect portable HDD, iPod, analog audio, Satellite TV, DVD and Digital Radio technology with touchscreen to boot!

Heck, throw in that bluray or HD DVD disc capability too!

This is not impossible in the near future and surely prices won't be very ridiculous if many manufacturers join the fray.

Cheers. [:)][:)][:)]

yester-year...

I rest my case.

Anyway, Carion used to have some models with hdd with music catcher, but seems the design is not popular anymore as new owner embrace "yester-year" tech of using iPod and USB support. [rolleyes]

Maybe try and look for the Clarion hdd models in the 2nd hand market for your search for new technology. Sgsoundsystems should have that model for sale once a while.

Frankly, I dont think HDD and car mix...

u see, car is moving and so is the HDD, it will sooner or later cause damage to the HDD when u car go over hump or pothole...

I think when u use the CD player, u will notice this problem too...

The only HU that is 100% no distortion (to movement)i had use so far, are the DAB52 I had in my old ride.. it had a SD card reader built-in (but I think it only read up to 2GB - sometime)..

Initially, did not use the SD function (abt 4 years ago) due to the high cost of the SD card... but now the price is acceptable (2GB less than $50), but any memory higher will not be read successfully by the reader...

Now I will surely be looking at HU with a built in SD Reader..
