Glad you have entered into the world of homebrewing!!!

One of the best place to seek support is to visit iBrew's forum http://ibrew.com.sg/forum/.

I have an IPA (India Pale Ale) in the fermenter as we speak, will be bottled in 2 days, should be good for CNY.

Tip: to find out if the carbonation is good, squeeze the filled bottles, it should be very hard. For first timers, please open the bottle over a sink as you have added too much carbonation drops or sugar at bottling, this results in "gushers".

You'll also notice that after chilling to about 5C, the bottle may soften a bit, this is due to CO2 being absorbed into the beer, but that's perfectly alright.

Cheers and enjoy your homebrew!

bottled today too...

just washed out my fermenter... but the residue left in the fermenter smells really nice n sweet leh. hah...

oohh... 1 more week to first tasting... smash.gif

you'll need 5-7 days to ferment, than secondary is another 1-2 weeks... so in about 3 weeks u r set, just in time for CNY!

4 days... i just checked the beer w the hydrometer, reading looks fine... about 1090... tmr check one more time, if reading never change can bottle loh! bounce1.gif had a taste of the beer too.... taste slightly sour unsure.gif not sure if it's infected... but it taste ok. will see...

Try to keep a record of your hydrometer's reading.

Best to take one when you start fermenting, usually it should read 1040-1048 unless its a strong beer, shooting for higher alcohol, it can go up to 1060 or higher.

It is safe to bottle when the reading is around 1012 or 1010 (same reading 2 days in a row).

If after 4 days, its at 1090 something is not quite right.

Sour taste, well I hope its not infected, one should be very ANAL about cleanliness when making beer or wine.

Good luck.

U may be able to do a "quickie", your beer may be slightly under-carbonated, but worth giving it a shot, after all CNY is 15 days of celebration, so "chap gor mey" surely will taste even better!

As long as you keep in a dark cool place, it should be ok.

Before I got my fridge, I just dumped the fermenter in the HDB "bomb shelter", turned out ok.

Get a large styrofoam box filled with water and dunk the fermenter into it, that'll keep it cooler than ambient. Of course if you got a maid, ask her to change the ice packs in the water daily. Of course you won't get award winning beer, but who cares??? As long as it taste good, its your creation!!!

hah... maybe i read the hydrometer wrong. anyways i did the 2 readings in 2 days n both record same reading then i bottled. the beer is not really that sour, it does taste m smell like beer. maybe tonight i'll open 1 bottle to try. hehe...

agree abt the cleanliness part, what did u use to sanitise ur equipment? i used household beach from NTUC, diluted 200ml into 25L or water, is that ok?

Yup...pretty sure its incorrect reading...no worries.

If the bottles are hard when squeezed, it should be carbonated, go ahead and try it [flowerface]

Yes, I use bleach before, its ok, but make sure you rinse well.

I use iodophor (iodine) thats' diluted, 0.5ml to 1000ml concentration. It can be safely used without rinsing, like most "one-step sanitiser".

If you know people working in MacD or other fast food restaurants, they have these "one-step sanitiser which is food-grade...
