What's with the design of the Matrix? Suppose to be design house Pininfarina of Ferrari Fame...... [crazy] Doesn't look Italian and I'm sure the Korean in house designer could do better.......

 

Make one look at the PT Cruiser twice instead [:p]

First look seem unusual at close range. Quite stylo, when look from far somehow seem to have some kind of a short cut design.

 

Nearly wanted to get one, however, the engine intrude into the cabin and quite audible during the test drive.

 

Bodywork design is more to conti style, thnik they try to copy scenic.

Eh... dont agree that this car tries to look like a Scenic. In fact, I think it tries very hard not to look like any car... hence the odd shape. I agree that this design really is a let down. At least that Daewoo mini car designed by the Porsche designer looked much better. What is that model again? I mean th Daewoo small car touted as excellently designed by some famous chap.

I said try to copy the scenic in form, concept and functions. Not in look. Eg clever stowage solutions (plenty of space), small on the outside and big on the inside.

As for looks and design, to each its own, some like it other otherwise, that is personal. For me certain angles look good, however, on the whole, felt somewhere is shortchange.

when i collected the matrix on behalf of my fren yesterday, found it to be seriously lacking in power. its a 1.6, but underperforms terribly. maybe the engine not seasoned yet, but somehow korean cars <2000cc engine very rough, compared to my corolla 1.5 which i collected just few days before. very much smoother even though not run-in yet. maybe it's an unfair to compare japanese car with korean makes, but japanese car tends to pay more attention to the subtleties where the korean is neglecting.

I think lacking in pick-up is more correct rather than power. The 1.6 litre engine is not lacking in power but rather heavy from the start, so its 0-100 definately slower then corolla.

 

Try the korean alpha 1.6 when it is cruising say at 100 and pick-up from there and compare it with corolla. And cruise at constant 130 or 140, then maybe the corolla might not be as smooth and quiet as the korean.

 

Handling wise the korean car are nearer to the euro standard as compared to the family saloon of the toyota.

 

Driving for hours on highway I would prefer a 1.6 or 2.0 korean car but city driving a jap car is ideal. Engine refinement at low rpm and speed is only but one part of the total car.

Agree with Sky. I am driving a Matrix 2. Once run in, it's hard to keep your speed down. Handles very well and this gives you confidence at speed. For such a big and tall body, very little or almost non existance wind noice.

Roll - yes but not significant. Very well controlled. Impressive for such a tall car.

See a Matrix daily at my office carpark and also peer into the cabin and look around it as it's a chic and strange Korean..... [;)]

From "How Stuff Works"

 

Think about what happens to a car in a sharp turn. If you are inside the car, you know that your body gets pulled toward the outside of the turn. The same thing is happening to all the parts of the car. So the part of the car on the outside of the turn gets pushed down toward the road and the part of the car on the inside of the turn rises up. In other words, the body of the car "rolls" 10 or 20 or 30 degrees toward the outside of the turn. If you take a turn fast enough, the tires on the inside of the turn actually rise off the road and the car flips over.

 

Roll is bad. It tends to put more weight on the outside tires and less weigh on the inside tires, reducing traction. It also messes up steering. What you would like is for the body of the car to remain flat through a turn so that the weight stays distributed evenly on all four tires.
