Most probably by another 1-2 generations more and the language will be probably lost here. Based on the Minnan phrasebook which someone posted, not too sure how exactly the word is supposed to be pronounced as I never heard it before. Actually there are a lot of Hokkien words which were borrowed from Malay: Hokkien = Malay = English pasat = pasar = market penkang (sic) = pangang = roast tombelling (sic) = tebalik = upside down salar = salah = wrong kopi = kopi = coffee loti = roti = bread kaya = kaya = rich (directly translated) ... coconut jam mata = mata mata = police sotong = sotong = cuttle fish lew lian = durian (comes from the word duri, which means torns) = durian lojak (sic) = rojak = mixed up cully (sic) = kari = curry Edited February 23, 2008 by Jolie888 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I don't care ppl think I Ah Beng......MUST always remember our roots...I . made a mistake to speak with my first born gal.... now she can't talk hokkien with Ah mah!
