In the word ENOUGH, the GH is pronounced as if it were an F sound.

 

In the word WOMEN, the O is pronounced as if it were an I sound.

 

In the word POSITION, the TI is pronounced as if it were a SH sound.

 

Therefore, G-H-O-T-I is read as FISH

When I was a kid, I read that this was attributed to George Bernard Shaw.

 

Now I find out that he attributed it to someone else.

english is such a terrible language...

 

It is wildly inconsistent, but it is because of the liberties one can take with the language that great works of art can be created. Flowers of Paradise blooming on putrid compost, as it were.
