Elmo 4th Gear February 9, 2011 Share February 9, 2011 Hi all, Hope to get some advice on track day tyres. I am planning to go tracking at PG/Sepang for the first time and not very sure how much my tyres will wear out in a 3-hr session. Currently on 3 month old PS3 so feel a bit heartpain if I have to chugged them after 1 tracking session. So do tyre shops sell those used track tyres (maybe about 60% left) cheaply for those 1 off track sessions and I changed out my tyres for the day? Thanks for any advice. Cheers! ↡ Advertisement

Mugen85 1st Gear February 9, 2011 Share February 9, 2011 Alternatively, you can look around in car forums... Many selling their tyres. You can keep as spare for future tracking sessions.

Just don't wanna waste my new tyres. Haha.

Davidtht Neutral Newbie February 9, 2011 Share February 9, 2011 The other option if you are serious about going is to have a 2nd set of rim and tyres for track us. How much wear depends on how hard you push during the session.
Yellowrx8 Clutched February 9, 2011 Share February 9, 2011 Juz dun think so much lar.... First timer the burning of ur rubber will jus be average. Best is go Sepang. Dun waste time at PG.

How much wear depends on how hard you push during the session. Wonder where do serious trackies store this 2nd set? Do tyre shops allow this for a fee? Anyway, will probably go with the current set and see how's the wear first. If I should track regularly then will get a proper 2nd set. Lagi best if fellow trackies pool together and rent a common store like StorHub..... And on track day, a van will carry our tyres and rim.....machiam InitialD.....haha...I'm getting carried away. I just squeezed myself into a coming PG session....maybe they will go Sepang in future. See how my first session goes.....though I feel I will be "hooked"

Anyway, will probably go with the current set and see how's get a proper 2nd set. alot of people run the tires they run on street. The reason is very simple, to understand the capability/ limit of their car as it is. If u ran with separate tires, you will never know the true characteristic of the car on the street. Dirtbike Clutched February 10, 2011 Share February 10, 2011 tyres shld last u about 2 track days at PG....also determine by how hard u push round the tracks... Sepang will be more gentle, a typical sports/semi tyres should be able to last about 3 track days..

It will also be a good opportunity to see how good the PS3 is.

Hopefully with my gentle beginner driving and proper alignment, it should last me more than a few track days. On the other hand, as I progress, I should be wearing out the tyres faster, else keep driving at slow speed also can't test my own limit.
Davidtht Neutral Newbie February 10, 2011 Share February 10, 2011 The thing with going to track is the rubber compound of the tyre changes so after 3 or 4 sessions, even if the tyre still has thread, the compound might have harden. When i was still riding a bike and go track, we had to change our tyres usually after 4 track sessions.

When i was still riding a bike and go track, we had to change our tyres usually after 4 track sessions. If hardened that means less grip right? Since it doesn't flex as well to increase contact on road. Does this hardening happen to all tyres? Btw what tyres will you recommend that is good for street and occasional tracking? I don't mind noise or no comfort. Just want good wet grip and good wear rate.

Dun waste time at PG. why do you reckon PG is a waste of time? i guess your timing should be very fantastic on pg? imo, although it may be abit run down and smaller , but it is a very technical track and dangerous too with the walls so close that allows almost no margin for error. ↡ Advertisement
