If you are young, no problem with the platform bed.

However if you are not young anyway and planning to stay long term, do get a normal bed.

Rather than a platform bed, you can ask contractor to make a platform in the room. This, overlaid with mats, and no need for thick mattresses, can serve as sleeping area for kids. I did this for my current home.

It's not exactly sleeping on the floor, so it's okay. It also doubles as a cosy gathering place during bedtime, can sprawl out with the kids to read to them, chit-chat, etc. Or can clear away the mattresses, then it serves as a play area. The kids can sit or lie down on the platform for longer periods as it's not so "cooling" compared to tiled floor.

Only for kids though... for old people, not so suitable as they'll find it difficult to lie down and get up.

maybe build it in an hybrid way ie keep one side of the "platform" design as something the person can get out of bed in a normal way as in a conventional bed? one way is to forgo the "platform" on this particular side. It may look "unbalanced" but at least the problem of getting out of bed in a normal way is overcome.

I still think it's a dust magnet. Not easy to maintain.

Use normal bedframe with 4 legs with a solid headboard. Nothing should be installed below it, i.e. no drawers, etc to maintain proper airflow and ventilation. Underneath your bed, you can use vacuum cleaner to regularly remove dusts.

Whatever it is, always make sure the mattress base is solid piece of wood or support.

Those with strips of wood is BAD for backs. Support not good

Decorating with Canopy Platform Beds

One of the problems with modern bedrooms is that they all look the same! Although clean, simple lines lend themselves well to a range of bedroom décor, there are times when you want to break the mold and inject a little of your own personality into your bedroom! If this describes you, there is an increasingly popular option that is easy to install, and looks like a million bucks – the canopy bed.

Canopy beds consist of any normal bed as a base, and a set of canopy bed curtains which hang around the bed. They can either be hung directly from the ceiling, or from a decorative frame that stand around the bed. If you like to change the look of a bedroom every once in a while, you can simply change the canopy without having to redecorate an entire room. For adult bedrooms add a romantic, dreamy feel to your bed – imagine your significant other drawing back the curtains to deliver your breakfast! Kids love canopies too though, with themed designs giving them a fun treat that may also make them feel a bit safer at night.

Canopy bed frames come in many different styles. For instance, wood canopy style beds can be elegantly carved, reminiscent of classic four poster beds. Wood canopy beds are also great for children’s rooms as they are strong but not too hard around the edges in case playtime gets a little rough. Wooden canopy beds are often stained to show off the wood, ,but some also have bright paints if you need to liven up a room. The combination of traditional paneling and clean contemporary framing is also attractive to many who prefer four-poster beds.

Metal canopy style beds may be for those who enjoy artful sculpturing with a durable frame. Metal bed posts have options for traditional settings with finial accents and contemporary styles with simple cross beams. Metal frames can also be found with open styling, featuring grillwork at both the headboard and footboard of the bed. In fact, a canopy bed frame can stand on its own with or without an actual canopy giving you even more options for decorating.

These beds are so versatile that there are even daybeds made specifically for outdoor use when you want to relax outside in comfort and in the shade. If you go for a canopy bed frame, make sure it works well with your other furniture pieces so you end up with a relaxing bedroom design. Apart from that, the only consideration is ceiling space to accommodate your bed. With these factors ticked off, there is nothing stopping anyone from enjoying the classic appeal of a canopy bed for themselves today.
