No one deserved to be beaten. I am just trying to conclude what actually happened that spark off the fight. Otherwise, wat you deemed could be the catalyst that led to the fight?

This big bully could be a walking powder keg on that day anyway. If not the taxi driver, it's gonna be someone else.

Some people will just want to grab an excuse to let off, lacking in anger management and you might not be the cause. Many drunks I have seen, just wanna look for trouble with or without excuses.
