Deciding whether to shift in auto tranny to the lower gears also depends on the gearbox. Newer adaptive shift trannies probably won't need user intervention to shift down as they are more sharper in response compared to older autotrannies.

Like my brick has a TCM (Tranny control module) but it does not have adaptive shift, just learns once and stays that way. So only during my Genting hill climb I had to shift between the low gears to minimize gear hunting and overheating of the ATF [crazy]

I'll probably learn more about it IF i'm driving an auto now! [:p][laugh][laugh] The only thing I've learnt with auto tranny at that time was - do not forget to flush and replace tranny oil! [laugh][laugh] Or else plenty of money need to be spent later! [laugh]

Dropping gear at 170kph?????[/reply]

I'm not talking about manual overriding... i'm just saying that the auto transmission will do it automatically to achieve higher speed.... literally like dragging lah.....

Yeah I know about the auto tranny dropping gear automatically for more torque but at 170kph???? My 4th gear can only reach 185 at redline so at 170, there's not much point dropping gear! [crazy]

if my tranny drop gear at 170kph i will see flying valves and pistons all over the place, together with a torn bonnet and broken windscreen.

[:p]

Oh................. [:p] Sorry, me don't know much abt auto tranny. [blush] When I had my Subaru Legacy for the 4 years, I just drove with the shifter always in 'D'! [laugh]

I am sure 'D' is sufficient in Sillypore traffic. [;)]

That's wat i felt !!! [sly]

Good thing my car has a robotised shifter! Can drive like manual and when I got lazy, can still switch to 'auto'. Actually have not used auto for more than a few minutes since I got my babe! [:p]

Dear all

Some info I managed to gather:

HOW TO PROLONG THE LIFE-SPAN OF YOUR AUTO TRANSMISSION*

1. When you come to a traffic light (ie you only expect to stop for a short

while), DO NOT shift to neutral - you will cause more wear & tear to the

transmission. DO just put on your foot-brake or your hand-brake.

2. When you want to shift to Reverse from Drive, do it in stages (ie from Drive

to Neutral, then to Reverse), and make sure your vehicle is completely stopped

or you risk clashing the gears. DO NOT shift direct from Drive to Reverse!

3. DO regularly maintain your auto-transmission. On average, a transmission is

expected to last for between 100,000 - 120,000 km of driving. You should get

your transmission serviced every 20,000 km. Note that in some cases, the

mechanic simply DRAINS the system and REFILLS it. This is NOT SO GOOD. It is

better to get the system FLUSHED.

* on average, an auto-transmission change can cost up to $2,000, depending on

who you get it from!

Watch out for the following warning signals: it could mean that your

auto-transmission is developing problems:

HOW TO TELL IF YOUR AUTO TRANSMISSION OF NOT WORKING PROPERLY

1. Slow response or no response at all when shifting to Drive or Reverse, from

Neutral. When you shift the gears, the car should respond IMMEDIATELY. If it

does so with a delay or does not respond, something is wrong!

2. RPM (on your tachometer) does NOT DROP when shifting from Neutral to Drive or

Reverse. If during any gear-shift the RPM continues or goes up (ie surges),

have your vehicle checked!

3. During upshift eg from Drive1 to Drive2 to Drive3 etc, the vehicle jerks.

Seek some help if you notice this symptom.

Regards

Lester
