Kardachia Neutral Newbie January 9, 2004 Share January 9, 2004 Can anyone just enlighten me on what is an immobilizer as that of the Corolla Altis. Is it some kind of keyless entry thingy also? ↡ Advertisement
Mavvy Clutched January 9, 2004 Share January 9, 2004 Your key will have a chip and the transponder on your car will recognize it when you shaft it in.. even you duplicate the key and manage to open the door.. the car won't start it.. Immobilizer..

Sync Neutral Newbie January 9, 2004 Share January 9, 2004 Me thinking of doing one DIY, at very very cheap price http://www.autospeed.com/cms/A_0059/article.html
Mavvy Clutched January 9, 2004 Share January 9, 2004 I ain't no electrician nor mechanic... so I won't have the chance to DIY.. You are the first to tell me DIY for immobilizer.. so when your project starting ?
Sync Neutral Newbie January 9, 2004 Share January 9, 2004 I'm no electrition or mechanic either, but this setup is really really simple. All you need is to know how to solder a wire to a contact. But what I don't know how to do, is to open up parts of the car where I would place the reed switch (possibly the door area), and also the parts of the dashboard that I can install the switch and the led. And finally, I would need to know where the electronic fuel pump is located so that I can install the big relay there so that the car can still travel a distance, but dies later in a few hundred meters. Which is where you want the angry gun man to be when you give him your keys, far far away from you, yet still at a locatable distance. So, no timeline yet dude.. Have to familiarize with my car first, as I'm a newbie in cars. Cost of installing this DIY immobilizer - about $20 to $30 or less (maybe $10 as I'm not sure about the costs of the heavy duty relays) Cost of getting mechanic to install an after-market one - $100++ to $300. And in my friend's BMW case, the remote control alone costs him $250, without the immobilizer
Mavvy Clutched January 9, 2004 Share January 9, 2004 it does look simple.. but no experience in doing... risk of short circuit yourself.. nor sure about the car.. best to conceal it... since your immobilizer is only a switch.. I wouldn't even want him to drive a few hundred metres... nor to start it... basically dead to him well well.. newbie is me.. cheap wor.. $20-$30.. kekeke... well.. at least mine comes with it... Sync Neutral Newbie January 9, 2004 Share January 9, 2004 >> I wouldn't even want him to drive a few hundred metres... nor to start it... basically dead to him Two school of thoughts and also two different types of immobilizers out there. And in this DIY one, you have both type, depending on where you installed the relay, the starter, or the fuel pump. To me, if the fella robs the car from me, say by pointing a knife or gun at me, asking me to give the car keys and/or wallet, I'd rather have the drive away type. Else there's potentially more harm that can be done to me. If a guy managed to steal your keys while you are away from your car, well, to me, the guy would walk away from the car thinking that the car is dead, instead of knowing that it's immobilized. >> best to conceal it... since your immobilizer is only a switch.. You can have the main switch shown to the world, no one will know what it is, or better still, if your alarm system allows you to have external connections, you can do away with the switch and connect it to the alarm system, unfortunately the Waja's stock alarm system is pretty much a stoopid, non DIY friendly one, but still can mod IMO. It's the reed switch that you need to conceal, and there are a lot of places you can conceal it, the steering wheel, the door, the gear shaft area, any parts of your dash that's within reach when you are doing normal everyday things, like putting on the seat belts. Since reed switches are activated by magnets, you can hide them anywhere you want. ↡ Advertisement
