Jamesgetz 4th Gear February 28, 2005 Share February 28, 2005 care to elaborate why the M1 Gold 0W40 oil is 'sucky'? almost wanted to buy it at $80/4L. am using Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 bcos got cheap lobangs of $50/4L but just realised Shell helix ultra is only A3-98... is there a big diff between A3-02 and A3-98? ↡ Advertisement
Qooo Neutral Newbie February 28, 2005 Share February 28, 2005 Does this means it should be good? Already using it in my baby! Found out that they poured in only 3 and 1/3 bottle. So bought another 3 bottles so that I can use the same oil for the next change, which is 6 months time. So averaging out will be 7x16.9 / 2 = $59.15 per service. I should be able to keep the 2/3 bottle remainder til the next service right? Monitoring my FC at the moment.
Genie47 1st Gear March 1, 2005 Share March 1, 2005 It is rated MB 229.3 and this means the oil is supposed to hold its grade up to 40k km but many who did analysis on this found that it will thin to 30wt as fast as 8k km. I think the 5W30 selling in Carrefour is much better. A5 rated. Big difference between the 02 and 98? 02 bettter lah! More stringent.
Genie47 1st Gear March 1, 2005 Share March 1, 2005 Yes the oil is good. Can whack until 20k km if you dare.
Glyuen 3rd Gear December 23, 2005 Share December 23, 2005 Firstly, apologies for bringing up this old thread. The blue-cap bottle of M1 5w30 is A5 rated (ie better than A3?) and GM4718 rated for high temp stability in Corvettes. However, how come this site cautions MB owners for using this oil? http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html Quote: "some oils which are not recommended: Mobil 1 SuperSyn 0W-30 SL/SJ/CF A1/B1/A5 9.7 doesn't meet 229.1 nor ACEA A2 or A3 Mobil 1 SuperSyn 5W-30 SL/SJ/CF A1/B1/A5 9.8 doesn't meet 229.1 nor ACEA A2 or A3 Mobil 1 SuperSyn 10W-30 SL/SJ/CF A1/B1/A5 10.1 doesn't meet 229.1 nor ACEA A2 or A3 These 3 oils do not meet MB spec of > 3.5 cP for high temperature high shear strength." This seems to be contrast to the GM4718 rating. Any comments on this "discrepancy"?

Carstyle Neutral Newbie December 31, 2005 Share December 31, 2005 (edited) Frankly, we are being told cxxxxxe 5W-40 is fully synthetic, but what kind of oil base or additives they added, we are still in the dark. Maybe, somebody knows. I hope the so called synthetic technology is just not another Teflon case.
