Spango Clutched June 10, 2005 Share June 10, 2005 That depends on whether if you really want the heat rejection or simply a nice look for your ride. I am not sure about the cheaper tints, but I am sure they should be effective too. From my understanding, there are 2 types of films available - one is to absorb the heat while the other is to reflect the heat. For the heat absorption type, there is a threshold for the amount of heat it can take in, and once that threshold is reached, it will start giving out heat. As for the heat reflective type, it just keeps on reflecting the heat. However, bear in mind that no matter what type of film you use, your car will still get hot eventually. I was told that Huper Optiks and VKool are somewhat similar, and the same goes for their pricing as well. The difference is that VKool is metallic based while HO is ceramic based. Being metal based, I believe that one disadvantage it has is that there is a chance of rust setting in, especially if you live near the coast. I think for VKool, there was a need to cut a hole around the IU, while there is no need for HO. Mine didn't have any visible holes around it and the IU is still going strong. In addition, while I was deciding between the two types of tint for my ride, VKool was offering 5 years warranty for their film while HO was offering 10 years warranty. I thought to myself, with similar performance and pricing, why not take the extra 5 years? Another factor for consideration is the workmanship. The shop recommended to me does the installation in an air-con environment. They also discourage customers to hang in the room while waiting for their ride to do th tinting. Instead, they can wait in another room equipped with a glass panel to view the installation process. That should reduce the amount of foreign materials during installation. I've seen some cheaper tints done by the roadside, but I am not sure if dust will really be of a concern. For the place I went to, they do both HO and VKool, so this isn't much of a concern. I am rather satisfied with their workmanship, and till today, it has not shown any peeling or clouding at all. You wouldn't want to go back to the installer to rectify some problem every other month right? Last but not least, its the LTA compliance part. All the more expensive films do guarantee that they pass LTA requirement, if not they will redo for you. Not sure if the cheaper tint installations do that or not. I believe all these play a part and adds to the cost too. As they say, there is no free lunch... That being said, I've heard other brothers reporting that the cheaper tints do not perform that badly too... Maybe others can give some feedback? Brock 1st Gear June 10, 2005 Share June 10, 2005 (edited) Wah...Spango...composition writing style. Objective and clear. Anyway, just sharing. Mine is Lextint at www.perfect.com.sg. Xtraun did his there as well so after his recommendation, I tried. I paid $250 for mine. 50% front IR rejection, 45% rear IR rejection. Japanese-made (Sumitomo Corp.) film, which incidentally is used for buildings as well. This was the lowest category film of the lot. I didn't opt for the best quality film in terms of IR rejection rate (95% front and rear IR rejection) as my ride is 90% of the time parked under shelter. I must say they did a pretty good job. Use spray bottle to apply the soapy solution (which was made from Johnson's baby shampoo, the yellow liquid one). Towels were placed at the panels to prevent the soapy solution from running down the panels. No need to cut hole for IU. They finished the job in 1 hour with 5 people doing the job in an airconditioned room. I inspected their work, noticed a couple of irregularities. They fixed it up without question. Till now, no bubbles or problems with the film. IU works fine. Car feels cooler than without the film. Not as glaring as before. This has by far the best investment I made on the car. They are also fixing for diplomat cars... I saw a diplomat S600 there while I was re-doing my tinting on my windscreen... So it's either their workmanship not bad or they are the cheapest... Jonathanlee Neutral Newbie June 10, 2005 Author Share June 10, 2005 (edited) Dunno whether true anot[sweatdrop] After talking to the vcool sales team pertaining to why they must cut a hole near the IU unit, it look so ugly and really funny when other film maker dun do that?????? This what they say : last time they use to have it fully done, but when the IU unit goes through the gantry, the IU unit is not detected as the film ( Vcool ) protect up to 98% of infrared something!!!. Hence driver got a ticket thereafter!!! after the incident, they have a square kinda space cut out near the IU unit and everything solved. Guys, any comments? Here's my take on this issue: As we all know, the IU uses electromagnetic waves to communicate with the ERP gantry or the IU readers in carparks. Also, VKool film is metallic based, right? The shell of your vehicle is, also metallic based. Thus, if you do your tinting using the metallic based VKcool film, I believe that turns your car into a faraday cage, either containing any EM waves in or excluding them from the interior space, thus hindering with the communication between the IU and the ERP gantry reader. That is why they need to cut a hole at the IU to allow EM wave to pass through. I don't think this has got anything to do with IR as the IU doesn't use IR for communication (that would require line of sight). As for other type of films, they are not metallic based, hence, EM waves won't have any problem passing through the windshield, and thus there is no need to cut a hole...
