In recent years violent crimes that involved foreigners living in Singapore were often perpetrated against their own countrymen. These murders were crimes of passion - usually between foreigners who knew each other. It's work-related stress some would say, which are very much isolated incidents within the foreign worker community, others would mention to allay public fears. Many in several online forums say that a lax policy of allowing in foreign "talent" would eventually import crime to Singapore. But would crimes where foreign malefactors - who care little about (or are simply oblivious to) local laws and enforcement - commit violent crimes against law-abiding locals who are perfect strangers? What if it becomes random out of greed (murder-robberies/kidnap) or lust (rape)? Is this the first sign of that spillover? Decomposed body identified April 21, 2009 By Diana Othman THE highly decomposed body found in a forested area off Sembawang Road last week has been identified as cabby Yuen Swee Hong, 58. Police have arrested a suspect - a Chinese national - in connection to his death. The 30-year-old suspect will be charged in court on Wednesday with murder, which carries the death penalty on conviction. Mr Yuen was believed to have been robbed and killed. It is understood that the Special Operations Command and the Police Dog Unit combed the area for clues for almost 15 hours after the grisly find. Mr Yuen was one of the two bodies discovered last week. The body of 35-year-old Bharat Singh was retrieved from the Singapore River opposite The Riverwalk complex on Sunday morning. - Straits Times I'm unsure of the details, but if the alleged killler did this simply because it was a means for him to rob someone, anyone, then maybe we should all start being concerned and question whether being overly-welcoming is such a good idea after all. I hope I'm overreacting. I really do. But I can't help but worry if this becomes a trend.
