It's no longer the Nagare design philosphy for Mazda but the Shinari, said Mazda at a press conference in Milan a few days ago. The Shinari design concept car takes its design language from the Japanese concept of 'Kodo' or 'soul in motion'. This new concept will replace the natural Nagare concept which takes the flow of motion in nature. In other words, both are ideas about movement, with the new concept supposedly more soulful than the earlier more nature inspired one.

The Shinari design philosophy consists of a large gaping grill which is slightly more sombre looking than the 'smiley' of the Nagare concept. The lights are slimmer and the car looks more European with its Maserati Quattroporte/Aston Martin Rapide like stance. It is slightly more subtle than the Nagare, which has curves and lines. Like water flowing. Or you may also say, a less 'happy' design.

Anyway, Mazda had displayed the four door Maserati Quattroporte (from the front)/Aston Martin Rapide like concept car at the press conference and the photos herein are official renderings that have been presumably leaked on the net. Some say that the styling cues may surface in the RX8 or the Mazda 6 replacement as Mazda's design chief Ikeo Maeda mentioned to journalists that the Shinari will become the next generation of the Mazda design language.

The older Nagare concept was penned by Mazda's previous design chief, who has since joined Renault. There are two reasons why Mazda chose to change the design philosophy. One is that the Nagare concept with its smiley face and curves and cuts everywhere is hard to translate to metal. The more cuts and curves means more shape forming. Meaning panel work may be at an extra cost for Mazda. The face lifted Mazda 5 MPV was restyled to the latest Nagare concept which was showcased in the Furai concept car and it did not seem too successful with all those extra lines at the side of the MPV. I.e Too much style for style's sake.

But the second reason could be stronger. A new design chief would want to prove his mettle over his predecessor. Hence the change in design philosphy. What do you think?

This Mazda Shinari concept car is truly hot and sleek. It has that sporty futuristic style on the body which really matches it's huge size. I also like the bolder and more appealing front face and grill of the car. Based from the pictures, it looks like it has no door handle and the only possible way to open the door lock switch is a remote which is kinda strange. Anyway, hoping I could see it in person and ride one of those someday.

  • Godzilla Minus One: Surprisingly emotional and poignant

When one thinks of Godzilla movies, one imagines an oversized amphibious dinosaur generating a terrifying heat ray from its mouth and fighting with other oversized monsters. Meh, nothing special, right? Wrong. Here’s why Godzilla Minus One should be an action movie you should definitely catch. In this version, the timeless clash between monster and man is once again set against the tumultuous backdrop of post-war Japan. But, unlike typical action films that dive headfirst into destruction a

Are forums outdated? I try to find out by asking AI

Is your boss asking you to explore and learn how to use AI to improve the quality and efficiency of your work? Yup, you aren't the only one in that boat.  Whilst exploring new AI tools, I figured: Why not use it to answer some burning questions that I have? This time, it was about whether forums are outdated. Yes, forums like this one that we are on. I remember how before social media became popular, and before apps like Carousell existed, forums were where I chatted with others t

Why oolong tea could be the superior drink of choice at lunch

Coffee - without sugar! - has long been (and still is) my go-to option to accompany my lunch. Amidst a larger 2025 goal of reducing the number of cups of kopi-o kosong I gulp down a week, however, I’ve recently thought about how my lunch experience can be switched up slightly with yet another sugarless drink: A can, or indeed bottle of oolong tea. Oolong tea is said to offer a perfect balance of flavour and functionality - perfect not just for complementing one's meal but also reinvigo

Forget the Future - Embrace the Past

Ah, the future. That shiny, chrome-plated paradise we're all supposed to be chasing. Well, I say bollocks to that. Let's take a cheeky detour down memory lane instead, shall we? Imagine you're lounging in a velvet smoking jacket, sipping brandy from a crystal snifter, surrounded by dusty tomes and antique globes. Sounds rather spiffing, no? That's because old is gold, methinks. While everyone else is frantically scrolling through their social media feeds, we'll be gleefully embracing t
