blogentry-133713-0-78621200-1421759692_thumb.pngTouted as a greener alternative to the GTI and GTD, the Volkswagen Golf GTE was never expected to be the fast. But it seems like it is the fastest among its siblings.

 

blogentry-133713-0-44167200-1421759709_thumb.jpgAccording to Automann-TV, they managed to clock the GTE's century sprint in 6.3 seconds which is much faster than what Volkswagen claims it can do (7.6 seconds). In fact, it is faster than both the GTI (6.5 seconds for our local 217bhp version) and GTD (7.5 seconds).

 

Powered by a 150bhp 1.4TSI engine and paired with a 101bhp electric motor, the official output for the GTE is 204bhp and 350Nm of torque. Considering it is a couple of horses down and more than 100kg heavier than a GTI, we think Volkswagen might have under declared the GTE's real power output!

Perhaps VW average the results when the batts are fully charged, half-charged and almost flat. When it comes to consistency the hybrid will loose out due to the batteries charge.

And I'm sure petrol cars never have their century sprint timings fudged by the level of filling of the petrol tank before the run. I'll bet most of the advertised "fast" runs were obtained on fumes.

 

Electric motors develop instant max torque. It's no surprise that electric cars/hybrids dominate at the low-end.
