Why did this Hiace driver jam on the brakes right before the ERP gantry?

No one likes to pay for Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) charges, and sometimes it's funny to see how a simple system that helps regulate traffic flow has the potential to cause so much frustration for people like this Hiace driver.

Watch the video here:

This incident occurred at ERP 42 on the slip road from the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) to the Central Expressway (CTE).

What happened?

As the cam car approaches the slip road towards an ERP gantry, a Toyota Hiace can be seen hitting his brakes abruptly before coming to a halt just before the gantry.

This dangerous action from the Hiace driver caused the cam car to react with an emergency brake as well.

Shortly after, the Hiace driver turns on his hazard light.

The cam car proceeds to overtake the Hiace and carry on with his journey, only for the Hiace driver to drive off.

Possibilities

At first glance, it seems as though the Hiace driver was attempting to avoid ERP payment by waiting for the ERP timer to end.

However, a closer look at the ERP timing disregards the initial intent of the Hiace driver's action.

Instead, it is highly likely that the Hiace driver either forgot to insert his stored-value card, or he was swapping an insufficient stored-value card with one that has sufficient value into his IU.

Nevertheless, actions like this should not be condoned.

Just pay the $10 fine or "administrative fee" and take it as a lesson learnt.

I forgot to insert cash card 2 weeks ago. So long no erp. As I drove under I thought its OK just pay the $10 fine. Surprise! Just received a $70 summon for the offence yesterday.....

Is this the rate these days? If I knew, I'd fake an accident/ breakdown before gantry just so I can save $70. That's 10-15 days of my lunch.

  • Godzilla Minus One: Surprisingly emotional and poignant

When one thinks of Godzilla movies, one imagines an oversized amphibious dinosaur generating a terrifying heat ray from its mouth and fighting with other oversized monsters. Meh, nothing special, right? Wrong. Here’s why Godzilla Minus One should be an action movie you should definitely catch. In this version, the timeless clash between monster and man is once again set against the tumultuous backdrop of post-war Japan. But, unlike typical action films that dive headfirst into destruction a

A 20-year journey, an old passion rekindled

For us 90s babies, the Holy Trinity of Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network formed a big part of our childhood. The internet was just about coming into fruition, with the rise of a plethora of websites with numerous entertaining flash games and of course, the early days of YouTube. And though those things have come and gone, one thing in my life remained constant: My love for Pokemon. I first got into Pokemon 20 years ago, and I remember exactly how it went down. Let me set the

    The Joys of Morning Walks

Like most other folks stuck in the rut of smartphone-hyper-use, I recently caught myself doing the same each morning: Waking up to immediately reach for my phone. Reflecting on the first quarter of the year, however – and realising that I’ve been subconsciously plunged into an extended bout of languidness – brought me to the realisation: Perhaps it's time to embrace a different routine. One that started with stepping outside into the crisp morning air, and feeling the gentle warmth of

The enduring charm of Singapore wet markets

I know I’m idealising it all - as a not-so-young millennial that can’t remember the last time he cooked a full meal for himself. (That was probably a good two years ago.) But moving on slightly from morning walks now, the space I’ve found myself frequenting when I feel like I need a break from the routines of everyday life (or to simply clear my head) isn’t the park. It’s the basement level of Punggol Plaza. That a wet market even exists here should be surprising. Punggol, after all, is qui
