Hi all

 

Considering the idea of getting one and wondering if anyone here got feedback on the car like overheating, air-con, fuel comsumption, servicing issues, etc etc. Really appreaciate the feedback cos have noticed a lot the octavia's are in the 2nd hand market now.

generally, I think most if not all conticars are well suited for our local climate. Maybe years ago batches would have problem (e.g. my 1994 peugeot 306) but so far I have been driving a VW and I don't find any problem, so I presume the same for Octavia, which I think together with Seat are value-for-money cars :)

 

if you wish to find out more about VW cars, there's a site where you can go to for more info. Othewrise, I think the Skoda'ians here will furbish you with more information :)

You should by now well know that I drive the Seat Toledo which is the effectively is the Octavia with a different set of clothes and nametag and here's what I can say about it:

 

1. Overheating - no problems with that to-date. I've been stuck in your typical traffic jams (my worse so far has been about 2 hours on the AYE when going home) and the needle never went beyond its "90" mark. The only problem was a slightly sore left foot.

 

2. Aircon - not too sure about the manual ones but some passengers have remarked that the digital climate control that mine comes with sometimes takes "...a bit longer than normal...." than the manual ones. So far, what I've seen also is that on manual aircons is that we tend to boost it up all the way to the max to maximise cooling while digital ones are usually left to work according to their pre-programmed behaviour, with thier sensors and all that, so there's a bit of room for debate on the mechanics of interior car cooling here.

 

3. Fuel consumption - on a relatively heavy-footed driving style doing 50/50 highway and city, I get about 10.8-11.2km/ltr, both based on the trip computer's readout and my own calculations. Hit 14.1 doing a NS-highway trip recently. My car is purely stock, manual 1.6ltr. I gather the Octy would do more-or-less the same.

 

4. Servicing - the first line would be the dealers. After that, there are others outside that can do such things, details on which I won't go into for now.

 

5. Spares - Apart from body panels and certain car-specific items, I believe there's lots of interchangeability between the A3-platform cars. One example I can think of for now are the mats - I know of ppl who got the non-slip A3 mats for their Tody because they were, interestingly enough, cheaper.

 

So, which Octy are you thinking of getting ? Personally, I'd really love the 1.8T

Well, i'm looking for a 1.4 to 1.6 car (driving a '93 elantra). My 1st car was a '74 celica. Can't seem to enjoy anything with lesser horses. I'm not really a bodykit+ performance mod kinda guy. Just need a stock that can carry itself well. Don't like japs cos they are too light and tend to float too easily at > 110 Kph (drving spped on sg eway). Besides I quite a big guy so need a decent powerplant. I was looking at the Octavia cos it's also got a huge tank (i live the north and I really benfit from the JB fuel while adhrering the >3/4 tank rule). Fill up drive 2 days then fill up again.

 

My elantra just drinks too much fuel and has already burnt all my pockets. My timing belt broke mid last year and you should know how muh it costs to replace/repair everything above the cylinder block.

 

I was also considering a Astra cos i know conti have better handling than japs. Just wondersing why there are so many astras and octavias on the 2nd hand market cos the cars are about only 2 yrs old.
