Can a getz 1.3A go up genting?

Hi forumers,

I am contemplating to drive up genting in a getz 1.3A, wondering if this car can make it a not. 1 driver and 1 passenger only, average size one..

I read in other threads about sunny going up genting and underpowered, using D1, D2 and D3 when going downhill.... but i am really worried about getz 1.3 because this car already a bit underpower even driving on normal roads and it is an auto.

Did anyone drive up Genting in a getz 1.3 before? Can shed some advice?

Getz i think only have D, D2 and L gear. Is 'L' equivalent to D1 in most cars?

I only have 3 gears to play around with... appreciate if anyone can shed some light on this. Thanks!

Yep, ya right. L=Gear 1.

Not that I have driven a car up Genting, but even with a full load, your Getz should make it to the peak perfectly fine, thin air or not. Just don't expect effortless hill climbing performance, and be mentally prepared to gun the throttle up the steepest inclines. [;)]

Thanks for confirming. Because i dun want to be stranded halfway up when car no power to go up tongue.gif That could be one of the worst thing that can happen tongue.gif I cant imagine letting the car roll backward down hill.... its really unthinkable... I think this could be one of the next higher challenge after my drive in trip to malacca, KL and Penang... smile.gif

uphill shudnt be a problem.. but downhill is.. your brakes will burn out fast if you keep tapping on it all the way down the hill.. try to engage lower gear and let the engine brake work..

Drove up to Genting on a Nissan March 1.0 manual with 4 adults before. No problem. You can switch off air-con to get a bit more power and have to use low gear on steeper slope.

Problem with AUTO going up hill is, at steeper slope when the car really get very slow and when you step on the accelerator, the gear will switch down and there will be a sudden surge forward. If you have "L", "D2" and overdrive button, do make use of it. Control the gear selection manually as much as possible at steeper slope (going up or down).

L = 1st gear

D2 = 2nd gear

D(without overdrive) = 3rd gear

D + overdrive = 4th gear.

When going down, do use engine brake and not keep using brake or you will have overheated brake pad and will cause problem when you do need it.

Most important....keep to speed you can comfortably control.

you should have no problems. dont worry too much about the low gears when going uphill. your auto tranny wont shift up if u are at low speeds. it's downhill that might be a problem. at least you have more than one low gear! all i have is L and D!

just pop ur tranny to D2 and i think it should suffice. dont burn out ur brakes. and be careful if it's wet.

No problem going up Genting. Just make use of your Low gear and be prepared to rev more than 4000 rpm if necessary. Switching off your aircon will help, and anyway it's cool up there. If you're going slow, just keep left and that should be fine.thumbsup.gifthumbsup.gif

The transmission won't do a very good job in selecting the gears. If you leave the gear in D position, and you accelerate hard up a straight, you'll back off the throttle when approaching a bend. The gearbox will sense that you are intending to upshift, and will change to the next higher gear. Once you leave the bend, you'll have to step hard again for the gearbox to downshift itself. So rather than wasting so much petrol, just leave the gearbox in the desired low gear.smile.gifsmile.gif

Hi Gantan88,

Driving up a long steep road of varied inclination requires an understanding on how the auto gearbox work. If your auto gearbox runs on D2 uphill and usually arrives at a bend or a steeper section just after it shifted to D3, then it is better to leave or lock your gear selection at D2. This will

a) prevent your gear shifting up to D3 and immediatly shifting down to D2 again at a bend. Even worse than this is when you reach a steeper slope, as you will lose revs rapidly and drop out of your power band. Your gearbox may even drop shift to D1 and you will take off again with a roar.

b) prevent frequent auto gear searching by your gearbox. If the characteristic of the climb causes your vehicle to constantly search gear at short intervals, then it is better to lock the selector at the lower gear.

c) provide a more comfortable ride and drive.

You got good driving downhill advice from the brothers here too. Just note that you must anticipate on your use of brakes downhill. Use the lower gear you are comfortable with, but you will still need your brakes. Tap your brakes -- do not use constant braking for long. Always release your brakes to cool it periodically.

The only car I have seen rolling backward on the slopes of Genting was an old Morris or Austin mini. Probably it was not well maintained or the driver selected the wrong gear (as it was a manual). Even the kancil is able to drive up to Genting, so I don't see why your Getz can't.

Enjoy yourself in Genting.

bro, no problem like rest have said...but rem to engage to low gear both when goin uphill and downhill...else your brakes will burn on e way down..

its a simple and straight drive now that the road directions very direct..one cheras turn and you are on e way...

Don't forget-If you are carrying a full load (4-5 adults w/luggages) turn off the A/C when ascending. U don't want to overheat the engine. Also engage only 1-2 Gears when going down, also try not to engage the brakes too often. Anyway, do worry, they have a vehicle recovery truck plying the roads, up & down. There's also a w/s near to the top.

Thanks all for the valuable advice nod.gif Feel more confidence now. On second thoughts i think the car will have more power because most probably i will switch off the aircon and wind down window to enjoy the cool air outside when i am abt 1/3 the journey up the hill. The cold air is also better for the engine isnt it? Should have more power than normal days smile.gif
