Hackzi Neutral Newbie April 16, 2002 Share April 16, 2002 (edited) Hi all, Newbie here... recently test drove the T5. Lots of screeching and spinning tyres...perhaps due to the power it has or my lousy driving! Comfort is very nice. But I guess like other turbo cars, the turbo sadly only kicks in from abt 3000rpm. Also, specs say 7.1 secs for the sprint but from what I've read, it's usually in the range of mid to high 7s or even 8s? Anyway, saw an ad of a 9 mths old red T5 for sale in the papers. Was told the OMV's $47k...rather high right? A brand new one costs $182,888 last I checked (was told by SM that the lowest was ard $172K) so what about this 9 mths old one? Asking price is in the $15+k range. The current $182K price does not include options such as traction control, anti-spin, bi-xenons, etc... wow, the price will go up to quite an amount with these in! Perhaps another thing I wish to find out is the reliability of volvo cars as I've heard quite some negative feedbacks as far as reliability, cost of parts, maintenance costs, fuel consumption (especially for cars like the T5?) are concerned. One last thing, heard the S60R will released soon. Massive car... anyone know if it will hit our shores and when? Guess it would be in the price range of the M3 and Audi RS6?! Any T5 or volvo owners can advise? Appreciate the feedback! TIA! Edited April 16, 2002 by Hackzi ↡ Advertisement
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 17, 2002 Share April 17, 2002 The S60T5 2.3 is a singular high pressure turbo driven with more turbo lag than the 2.0T. Effective turbo spoolup should occur at 2.5k rpm, U felt turbo coming on at 3k??? The 2.0T has an OMV of 38k and the T5 is around 44-48k depending on the batch and gadgets installed. Maintenance of a Volvo is definitely more costly than a Jap exec sedan but comparable to a BMW or Merc. Fuel consumption should be in the regions of 7-8km/l in city driving, up to 11-12km/l realistically on highways. The S60R is due mid or late 2003, the XC90 is coming end this year. P.S. I am driving a S70T5.
Fastforward Neutral Newbie April 17, 2002 Share April 17, 2002 Hi Hackzi I got a S80T6 with about 47,000K on it Reliability - So far no major problems however had some minor problems such as wind noise, rattling sound etc other than that, the car dives just fine. I don't know about the T5 but the T6 came standard with STC. Maintainence cost - So far OK as the car was under warranty until recently. servicing cost for the first 15K - 30 K was anywhere from $200 plus to 300 plus . This car needs 7 litres of oil. But at 45K the servicing cost went up to almost $800 as you will need to replace the spark plugs and brake pads. The parts I thought was ok but the labour cost was very high. Just the labour cost for replacing the spark plugs was about $140. SM claims that the spark plugs are hard to get to in the T6. Overall the labour cost was about $500 out of the $800.... so go figure. Fuel consumption - The computer on the car shows that it uses about 14 litres per 100KM which works out to be about 7km/litre . The Specs says that it is about 10litres/100Km. I thought it was reasonable considering the size of the engine. I've had a C220 before and it was doing about that. Overall - Nice car to drive. The T5, I test drove and it pulls as well as the T6 and corners well. Did not had a long enough drive to make better comments on it but I should be a great car none the less. Want to know more. Go to http://www.volvospy.com/frameset.php?bn=volvospy_s60 This is where the S60 drivers around the world talk about their cars. Hope this helps
Hackzi Neutral Newbie April 18, 2002 Author Share April 18, 2002 Yes, only felt the pull from 3k onwards. Hmm, the OMV of between 44k-48k for the T5 sounds good. Slightly higher than a 325ci (ard 44k-45k) which is 2.5l! Selling price for T5 lesser than that of the 325ci somemore... hmmmmm.... Hmm, if it's comparable to other conti such as BMWs, then I guess it's ok (i'm driving a bimmer now). Heard that the parts for volvos are very high and not that easy to find outside SM. Fuel consumption also sounds not too bad. So the R is coming only in 2003. Thot it'll be here end this year. Anyway, thanks for your reply! 8-)
Hackzi Neutral Newbie April 18, 2002 Author Share April 18, 2002 Hiya, thanks for sharing! 8-) Nice ride you have there in your T6... STC is not standard for the T5. Geartronic is also an option. Hmm, not surprised at all with the high labour charges! Are there any other workshops out there with the expertise to service volvos? Thanks for the link... Not decided which car to get yet..choosing between the 325Ci and the T5. Always love bimmers but the value-for-money for the T5 is quite attractive. The T5 has comfort, power and some neat features like the GSM phone and of course, safety. The bimmer is a very nice car to drive, handles well and all. Decisions, decisions.... 8-)
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 18, 2002 Share April 18, 2002 Parts for Volvos are readily available via Unico Motors who deals with Volvo, Saab and Renault parts. Prices are reasonable, some examples for my T5: airfilter - $19 oilfilter - $9 Sparkplugs (5pcs) - $45 Reasonable prices, outside workshops can do Volvos as well. I have some to recommend if U decide to get one. For the first two years of warranty just let SM do it, labor and parts should be covered fully. Check with them. Fastforward Neutral Newbie April 18, 2002 Share April 18, 2002 Hi Guys This was what I got charged on the T6 by SM Oil Filter 10.4 AC filter 43.30 Spark plug x 6 56.50 Brake pads kit front 142.60 Shell Helix ultra 7 litres 147.0 dust / multi filter 17.
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 18, 2002 Share April 18, 2002 That's about right but the brake pads are too expensive IMHO. My T5 pads are around $70 the most. btw, ain't your T6 under warranty? How come U are paying for the service?
Fastforward Neutral Newbie April 18, 2002 Share April 18, 2002 Hi Turbo Brick Just finished my warranty from SM. Are you still sending yours back to SM? Who do you use? Any good?
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 18, 2002 Share April 18, 2002 FF, I don't send to SM for servicing since warranty vanished. Usually DIY if possible else send to mechanic outside. My regular mech is in JB, locally I go to Powertune at Sin Ming.
Cktan Neutral Newbie April 19, 2002 Share April 19, 2002 Hi FF, not sure what they "service" for you at SM.[tongue] I saw that our northern neighbour has the below charges. Visit their web site and you will see what is covered by moving your mouse over it. I saw that their 45k servicing includes the following: Oil filter, gasket, filler cap seal, spark plug kit, 7 litres of helix ultra plus labour at a cost of RM843. Not sure if this is a fair comparison. I am thinking of going in to check them out to see if it make sense to do it there. You have an awesome ride, man. Fastforward Neutral Newbie April 19, 2002 Share April 19, 2002 Hi Cktan Thanks for the info bro I knew they were cheaper but never thought that they would be almost half the price. Have you been there? Whaich part of Skudai? The only problem is, you need kaki to go, if not what to do while the car is being serviced? almost one day. can go play Golf though.
Cktan Neutral Newbie April 19, 2002 Share April 19, 2002 I've not been there. Thinking of checking them out tomorrow as my misses is out of town this weekend. Got whole day visa...he he. I am not sure if they would allow U to see what is being done to the car. I used to do that for the Sin Ming mechanics so that I learn about the car itself too. Golf is cheap in JB though, but I tend to play "hockey" on the greens on the back 9. Too unfit and lousy player, I guess. CK
Hackzi Neutral Newbie May 19, 2002 Author Share May 19, 2002 Hi all, sorry for the last response but thanks very much for all your replies! Helpful indeed! Hmm, still searching for a change of ride. Right now, there're 3 T5s up for sale... a white one, a red one, and a grey one. Just saw & test drove the grey one today...it had full bodykit with dual exhausts! Looks nice! But somehow, the test drive felt a little different from the one I tested at SM motors, can't explain it but something felt not right... hmmm... and yet again, spinning tyres when I did a very slight cornering! Wondering if anyone opted for the DSTC on their T5s? Did some research and it seems the bodykit, eyelids looks like they're are from SAM. The exhausts read "Raceline", dun think can pass LTA's regulations. But the guy told me the parts are from Volvo, and the car used to belong to some guy at SM motors so everything is 'volvo-fitted' so shouldn't be any problems. Anyone have any ideas? Price is a little high IMO. What do ya experts think should be the annual depreciation for a used T5?
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie May 19, 2002 Share May 19, 2002 Forget about the red one, too much crap in the car and the wheels are badly scratched. The grey one U saw used to be SM Motors manager's car, the kit on the car is from Heico Sportive Germany. Exhaust definitely is not LTA-complient but there are ways to revert it to stock when inspection calls. Unless the car dealer can issue U a cert from SM stating that the mods are legal, don't believe their hearsay. This grey one has tuned ECU so essentially it should have at least 285bhp on tap. Where did U see it?
Cktan Neutral Newbie May 20, 2002 Share May 20, 2002 Hi Hackzi, how much are these T5s going for? What's the OMV and COE? With DSTC, there should not be a lot of wheel spinning rite? Very tempted to see see what my upgrade path is going to be like and of course the moolah involved. What's your current ride? Cheers and safe driving, CK
Hackzi Neutral Newbie May 20, 2002 Author Share May 20, 2002 Yup, totally agreed. The red one has full of crap on it. Totally spoils the car IMO! As for white one, didn't check it out. White on a volvo isn't exactly my fav combination, if ya know what I mean! 8-) Lastly the grey one... nice looking car especially with the kit and dual exhausts. Hmm, didn't know the ECU had been tuned (did ask the guy whether there were any internal mods but said there was none). Was responding to an ad in the classifieds last weekend. But somehow, the test drive on that car didn't feel right compared to the one I tested at SM...but then again, I'm no expert. Seems like I'll be spending more time during the weekends looking for a new ride! Sigh.....
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie May 20, 2002 Share May 20, 2002 Well good luck finding your ideal ride! Do scrutineer in detail, U're plonking good $$ into a car in SG so better get the best deal U can find! ↡ Advertisement
