Never coast on neutral. It's a safety hazard and also does not really save petrol as engine is idling anyway. Just keep on highest gear.

As for the main question, always try to upshift in the power band of your engine. If shifting is done prematurely, not only does it cause engine wear, it is also counter to the thought of "saving fuel". Your engine is way too low rev to generate enough torque, hence the juddering and the engine struggling. End up stepping on more gas to move.

u cant put neutral than turn ur car, if speed too high, ur car will skid. u must down shift before u turn. when to downshift? what u doing? doing normal turn or running with someone? if normal driving, just brake & downshift & turn loh. if runing than u must use heal toe.

at 80km/h u free gear, if u suddenly do a sharp turn to avoid something, ur car will skid badly. dun ever free gear, it very dangerous.

Most of it has been said, there is some hearsay but to sum it up:

1) Increase in FC.

2) Increase in load on the engine and drivetrain

The clutch will be fine. Its wear-rate is determined by how much slipping there is (i.e. faster gear changes reduce wear- but faster changes also cause more shock to the drivetrain)

There is an optimal range to upshift. It varies from car to car. For FC, anywhere between 2.5k to 3.5k rpm.

There is also an optimal range to downshift. Once again it varies, but the range is smaller than upshifting. Generally between 2.5k to 3k rpm. In case anyone is curious, you're stressing the engine much much more by upshifting early but there is less stress on the engine by downshifting early than any sort of acceleration (yes even less than if your 80 yr old grandma is accelerating).

Hi guys

I have a friend, who has the habit of changing gear before the car reaches enough rpm. It will cause a slowdown in picking up speed in the next speed in the next gear. In fact, for every gear, he does the same thing. When he reaches only 50, he changes gear to the 5th.

Apart from increasing the FC, what will other impact be? A faster wearing out of cluth disc?

Any advice?

Up-shifting mostly causes less wear and damange to cluth disc than forced down-shift. The impact of "premature shifting" may just be a feel of lack of power.

Never could understand the synchromesh thingy...

But wanna ask, if got synchromesh, any adverse effects to double-clutching anyway?

Kinda got into the habit of doing that after watching too much Initial D... [blush]

wad are the best kph to do downshift coz its very diff to feel and must see if got car or ppl walking in front.. any tip?

I thought 5th gear can't be engaged unless you travel over 80km/h. Something to do with the synchromesh.

Cannot be. I can engage 5th at 60+kmh without effort. But I usually do it at ard 72kmh la.

Maybe it only applies to some cars. But if it's a normal saloon, the FC must be pretty high for that car since 80kmh is around 3k rpm at 4th gear.

for normal driving, u brake till u know that speed not suitable for this gear anymore than downshift loh. i dun think got such thing as best km/h to shift.
