Hi, all. I'm asking on behalf of my friend. he owns a yr 2001 VW BORA 1.6, recently his car stalled and was unable to restart resulting in the car being towed to workshop. The diagnosis from the mech was tat the oil sump was damaged maybe due to bottoming and all engine oil leaked out. The required parts for changing is cylinder block, con rod, gasket... etc. major overhaul is required and was quoted 6k for the repairs..

but it seems that the mech is inexperienced with VW cars and seems quite reluctant to repair the car. the car has been in the workshop for three weeks with engine out and dismantled. he has tried calling a few other workshop but they require the car to be towed down before quoting.

my friend is at his wits end, any ideas or help would be greatly welcomed. Thanks.

Thank you for you prompt reply. The workshop my friend has sent his car to does not specialise in VW cars thus the lack of confidence from my friend. but the situation now is the engine is already out and dismantled and the mech says he is unable to source for a replacment engine from the scrapyards and wants my friend to look for it himslef.

He has already called a few workshops from above and most replies were to tow the car to their workshop to take a look. My friend is worrying about paying and towing the car here and there only to ba back to square one with repairs around 6-7k.

Do you have any idea whether the engine seized or could not start...kindly give a little more descriptions. If seized, an engine overhaul is the only way out, you wil be better off scraping the car, as it is probably beyond economical repair.

If you have a few pictures of the engine parts taken out, i can help.

I believe Eurohaus is in the same premise as Auto Spritze now...At least it was a couple of months back when I was there. [:)]

If repair cost so high, it would be advisable to scrap the car instead. Bora in year 01 have very high paper value.

5th year liao and based on old PARF scheme, should be able to get back some money.

Only in SG, prices of cars did not inflate but deflate instead!

My friend did call auto spritze but itseems that the charges will be similiar to agent...

How about Servo? Did he check with them? What did they say? Autospritze does more Merc cars than VAG cars if I'm not wrong [sweatdrop]

the bora 1.6SR engine is a very hardy engine. I ran on close to empty (yes, i had a engine oil leak from a seal) without any engine oil for i don't know how long, and one day, decided to check oil....and there was nothing. Added about 3-4 litres of engine oil and car is still running fine. (My car has high mileage, about 133,000km now.)

unless you go to a VW specialist workshop, you won't really know what ia actually wrong or what needs changing.

I recommend you go to AutoSprize (Eurohaus)- Same place now, and ask for Colin. Yes, Dennis (the AutoSpritze one) does Mercs, but Colin specailises in Audi and VW. I had my 1.6SR engine port and polished, overhauled and the seal leak fixed there as well. Colin has hte necessary diagnostic equipment (PC based VAG tool) and great mechanics working there. I would recommend that your friend bring the Bora in for him to take a look, it may not be as bad as first thought.

[thumbsup]

i had similar problem with my previous bora as well due to accident. it can be repaired, but will cost at least a few k depending on what needs to be replaced.

my advice, scrap the car and go buy the new Jetta. it makes more economical sense. your car's paper value is at least 45k or more.
