A few questions about preout ...

Question 1:

 

If a HU has 3 preouts ie Front, Rear and Sub

 

then if i want to hook up as follows:

 

the front speakers to 2 channels of a 4 channel amp

the rear speakers to 2 channels of a 4 channel amp

the sub to a monoblock

 

(ie got 1 4ch amp and 1 monoblock)

 

assuming i want to be able to:

fade from front to rear

balance left and right

control the sub independently

 

how many rca cables do i need? 3 right?

 

Question 2:

 

Also some HU say that the preout is Front, Rear/Sub Switchable. (technically only 2 preout rite??)

 

What does this Rear/Sub Switchable mean? Does is mean that i will NOT be able to do one of the following:

a)fade from front to rear

b)balance left and right

c)control the sub independently

 

if so which one?

you need 3 pairs of RCA cable to connect between both amps and 2 pairs of speaker and your sub.

Hi Darkness!

I have a ready pair of 5m RCAs - prepared to let go - let me know if u want!

For 3-way active, you would need to do the following for a HU with front/rear/sub pre-outs.

1. the front pre-out would have to be split 3-ways - either with a pre-amp/x-over or splitter cables - and connecetd to 6-channels of amplification

2. the rear would be connected to the amp powering your rear spkrs

3. the sub-out would be conneceted to the sub-amp or directly to the active sub

 

No. of Cables you would need:

a. from your HU - front/rear/sub-outs - 3 pairs of RCAs

b. for the front 3-way: another 3 pairs of RCAs from the pre-amp/x-over

Therefore total 6 pairs of RCAs. If additional processor/EQ in between, then additional RCAs required.

 

With the above set-up, you would be able to use your HU left/right balance, and also control the front/rear with the HU's fader. Hope the above helps!

Yes you are absolutely right for question 1. Now it's abit tricky for question 2 the rear or sub pre-out means that this output can be use for either rear speakers or sub woofer only.If it's use for sub woofer then you have no control over the rear speakers and you have to run your front pre-out into a active x-over or pre-amp or eq to split the signals to front and rear,which in return can enable you to fade from from front to rear. And you can still have control over the front, rear and sub output, alot of installer use your stock hu's speaker line out to connect directly to the rear or in some cases convert the rear speaker line out to low impedance adaptor or in cases whereby the hu has no speaker line out they use y adaptor to split your front preout into 2 pairs of rca out to your amp.
